Mastitis--help!

Hi,

I have what I think is mastitis, and I am really worried because I have trouble taking many antibiotics. My doctor prescribed a z-pack (azithromycin) because I can take those with no trouble. Will this work? Also, do I have to pump and dump? He suggested I do so, but Hale's book says hardly any gets to the baby. It's in the class L2. I know there is something about z packs causing jaundice, but I think that is in REALLY new babies. Like newborns. I read something about that a LONG time ago.

Any help would be appreciated. Laura B? Aren't you a pharmacist?

I'm not sure if that antibiotic is compatible with bfing...but they are out there and you shouldn't have to pump and dump at all.
Yes, the antibiotic will work. It worked for me...twice!

I get mastitis very easily. Had it 3 times in 1 month when ds was 1 month old. I started taking a lecithin suplement as the first warning of a plugged duct. It works like a charm for me.

I will go and get lecithin this week. Good to have on hand. This took me totally by surprise, as I have been nursing for 14 months! I thought this happened only early on. I have had plugged ducts before, very early on, but this is the first one since. I am blaming it on the new bra I was wearing. I think it was too tight.

So you have taken a z-pack for mastitis? I'm glad to hear that it worked. I start it tonight, hopefully all will be good. The pharmacist said it is fine with bfing.

I had this last week and it went away on its own with frequent nursing, lotsa sleep, and good eating.
BUT I feel it coming back today. I read on kellymom that swallowing cut up raw garlic does good things. Look HERE

So, I'm going to try that this time. I really hope I don't get the fever and aches again.

Any other natural tips out there for getting rid of it??
