Adding butter to Baby food

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our little guy is 6 months old,and I'm keen to follow the WAP foundations ideal that vitamins and minerals will be greatly absorbed in the presents of fat soluble vitamins namely that from butter, when added to his little meals of banana, sweet pot and carrot

My partner is not so sure because many books say not to give dairy until they are 12 months.

Anybody have opinions on this?

IMHO (and this may be out of line with what NT says, I don't know), if your baby is breastfeeding he is getting all the vitamins, minerals, etc. he needs from breastmilk. The food at this point is just for "practice" and not nutrition. In fact he should not eat too many solids as to replace a large amount of breastmilk at 6 months old. I personally would not (and did not) give any cow's milk products at age 6 months (except milk-based formula if the mother cannot breastfeed - as was the case for me). I did give my son some yougurt starting around 9 months, but under 12 months I avoided any non-cultured cow's milk products, including butter. If you are using cultured butter it may be ok under 12 months, but 6 months still seems very young for it.

Ypu can use ghee or clairified butter in place of ghee, it is just butter with the milk solids removed so you wont have to worry about it causing dairy allergies.

IME, butter rarely causes a milk allergy. Several friends of mine are allergic to cows milk, but can eat butter with no problems.

I gave my DS butter as soon as he started trying veggies and aggs, so from about 7 months on.

Solids are to be introduced as play, exploration, and for self feeding practice, not as a source of nutrition, thus, imo, butter isn't needed. A 6 month old's gut is still likely open, so I'd be careful what foods are introduced.

We add a little butter to ds's mushed veggies (typically raw butter) to aid in absorbtion of what little he gets in himself. (Usually he's wearing his food. )
