The prefolds I bought are offered in preemie, newborn, regular, and toddler. I make 7 lbs babies and so got 3 doz newborn...I have toddler diapers so I will only have the regular size to invest in, I figure around 4 months of age. I usually have a ton of covers on hand, bf babies poop all the time (and explosions can happen!) I use the dappie's NYLON kind (not too expensive and good investment, don't get the vinyl though, no breathing) as well as bummies and prowrap. And yes the newborn prefolds are great doublers later on!

Clara- I would think 4-5 covers would be good. Babies seem to get poo on a cover the first time it is used. I reuse wet covers after drying, but I wash poo covers. I would go for more infant prefolds. I am making fitteds to go with my newborn covers, but I have prefolds, too.

Yes, you can use smaller diapers for doublers and stuffings. I went ahead and bought some preemie prefolds because my first was in preemie stuff for 8 weeks. That makes it worth it to me.

Tell your hubby that we spent about 100-150/month for the first 3-4 months on sposies for Benji. That makes a big difference when you compare it that way! Benji was allergic to the cheaper diapers so we had to go with the Pampers swaddlers, and boy those things add up!!!!

Hmmm.... I have been eating some avocado every day. It makes it kind of strange to compare the little one to that. Oh no!

We heard the "baby beat" again today. We can't find out what we are having for 4 more weeks. Augh! Benji is certain that this is a sister. I told our doctor that we really need to find out the sex so we have time to convince him (and me) that we really want a boy. I was so happy when my doctor was glad that we refused the triple screen, and she is super supportive of my hypnosis birth idea. I think she will want to suggest whatever system to other clients. Yea! I love my doctor!!

Ugh... I just found out that in order to get a level 2 ultrasound, I need an OB to send the results to. I told the US place that I'd get a temp OB then and fire him when I get the resuts. They were a little shocked. I have fantastic insurance so I can do or go wherever I want without referrals.

So I have an appt with an OB next week and I'm a little bit freaked out. I don't want any testing except they can look at my pee. I just KNOW they are going to tell me I need testing and I'll have to blow them off. 2 appts with an OB is almost more then I can handle! But at least I'll get to hear a heartbeat or something.

I'd skip the regular prefolds & medium proraps for now. Maybe get 20-30 infant prefolds instead. Stalk the FS threads at Diaper Swappers for gently used preemie prefolds & covers. They're in them for so short a time that used ones would be perfectly serviceable and infinitely cheaper.

I didn't bother pinning prefolds before I put them in a prorap or fleece cover. Maybe if I was using wool....

Emma's Mommy- I hope you feel better soon!
Clara- I think your starting point sounds pretty good. You may want to forgo the medium stuff right now and instead spend the money on trying a couple different types of diapers. You may wind up finding that another style fo cover fits better, or that you want to have a few AIOs around or whatever. But sounds like you'll have some good basics. I still use my infant prefolds for wipe ups, and doublers. Oh- and I also don't/didn't pin or snappi. I just lay the pf in the wrap.
Panthira- good luck with wrangling an Ultra sound. Sounds like you know what tests you'd like and what you don't at least. I'm not used to having any tests pushed on me- yuck, I'd hate that.

Ok, just had to get that off my chest! I'm so excited! I didn't think it was ever going to happen!
Me too! Yesterday morning I was lying in bed and I put my hand on my belly and thought "good morning baby" and I felt 2 distinct kicks right where my hand was...
After that, since baby was obviously trying to communicate with me, I started asking "are you a boy" and "are you a girl" - but no such luck - babe was done talking

I think we were the last 2 to have not "really" felt movement yet - so Yay for us!

I have been having trouble eating - my appetite has been hit or miss - some days I am really hungry and other days nothing sounds good and I have to force myself to eat. Also, I have been having really bad heartburn/indigestion/acid reflux (not sure which it is - I haven't ever had any of those problems before) every night when I lie down to go to bed. I have been trying to eat a small dinner before 7pm - but still - 10pm and I lie down and - ugh! Makes me wonder if this baby is a boy because I am definitely having tons of different symptoms and cravings than I had with DD...The only thing that I can consistently eat all day long is dill pickles - makes me feel like a stereotypical preggo...

As far as diapers, I agree with the pp who said to wait on the medium sizes of stuff until you know what you REALLY like - I bought a bunch of different styles to start and ended up just going with AIO's. Plus, every baby is shaped differently and some brands/styles fit some babies better than others (some covers were too tight on my babe's chunky thighs).

Emma's mommy - feel better soon!

Well, I had tons of heartburn problems with DS but I haven't had it at all with this pregnancy (try propping yourself up in bed with a few pillows when you first go to bed... and tums, if you want), and I'm having lots of different cravings this time around(though I often crave pickles, even when I'm not pg!). Maybe you're having a boy and I'm having a girl??

Yay for the wiggling, dancing babies! I can't wait to feel my munchkin again!

Thanks for the diaper advice- I think I will skip the regular/ medium sizes for now, and focus on the little baby stuff. And I will definately tell DH about the $150/ month on disposables!

I really wish my baby would start moving up a storm, but not yet for me. I haven't started to show yet at all, my normal stomach is just hard now. It's so confusing! I wasn't heavy pre-pregnancy, about 10lbs overweight and I just wish this belly would pop already.

Could you guys clear something up for me? My OB(only for emergency purposes but just have a visit every 8 weeks so incase a transfer is necessary they are informed of my history) uses LMP and my MW uses gestation to measure weeks. I'm 17 weeks LMP and 15 weeks gestational. Whats the difference? Preference?

By LMP- "Last Menstrual Period- they start counting the weeks based on the first day of your last period. For me, for example, that was October 8th. So even though technically I wasn't pregnant that week, or the next, by the time I ovulated and the sperm hit the egg, I was "2 weeks pregnant" based on the LMP.

By gestational age, your midwife is using the baby's actual amount of weeks of existance- week one being the week that the fertilized egg started divinding and forming, approximately two weeks after your last menstrual period. Most "development sites" or pregnancy books go by LMP, as that has been how it has been calculated for so long.

Hope it helped!

Panthira, if you're going to get a US anyway, why not just rent a doppler to use and then return it? it would cost less than an apt, presumably (25 bucks or so) and you wouldn't have to mess with the OB's office, etc. Just a thought....

My insurance covers everything but a $10 co-pay. I want a level 2 ultrasound because I have a friend who's baby has a serious heart condition and without the US she had while pregnant with him, he would not be alive right now. Also, I was on heavy medication and had several xrays before I found out I was impossibly pregnant.

I don;t have a primary. I don't need one. I can *usually* call a specialist anytime I want without referrals. Not in this case I guess.

Thanks for the advice though.

I really need to figure out how to dodge the test crap OB's put you through. I just want an Level 2 US and that's it.

Thanks so much! That really explained everything. Anytime I would hear those terms I would just file them away for later, now I don't feel stupid.

At my ob's office, they do the pee test, weight and then primary visit and then send you to the lab for bloodwork and the 1 hour gtt. If they do it this way, you could just walk out and not tell them you're skipping the lab, they won't know until it's too late. If they want to draw it during the visit though, I'm not sure how you'd avoid it. Maybe you can call and ask how the initial visits are structured, saying you want to know how much time to expect, and ask how/when the bloodwork is done. Just an idea?

My only other thought is to book the apt with the OB, then call for the Level 2 US and use that OB's name. Unless you have to already be estabalished and have the US ordered by the OB, you'd be legit. Since you said your insurance doesn't require referrals to cover the service, it would only be a matter of making sure the US folks don't require it to be ordered by the OB.

Maybe??

Legally, diagnostic ultrasounds have to be ordered by a referring physician. That is one distinction between fetal photo type places and a true medical ultrasound. They do not generally give the full report to the patient (although most places will give you preliminary results at the time of the exam) The report has to be sent to the referring physician to presumably go over the results with you. The idea is that the test is much more meaningful with your clinical information.

It sounds like a hassel for you, I hope you are ale to work it out. I'm sure you will be able to choose the tests you need. I have never been pressured to do (or not do for that matter) any tests other than the initial bloodowork which I would have done anyway.
