Amendment for Taxes

I am trying to decide what to do. My taxes are all ready to file except I don't have a social security card for my baby yet. I can either file and amend them later or just wait. We are overseas (military) and it could take months for this to happen. Any reason I shouldn't just file and then amend them later?

I filed taxes last year and hubby had several W2s. Well, one was late so I filed with (what I thought) was the last paycheck stub from that company. When the actual W2 came in, there was enough difference and I had to file an amendment and pay about $130 back to the IRS.

It was really easy to file the amendment, but I had to paper file it.... I couldn't do it online and it does take awhile for the amendment stuff to be processed at the offices.

So, you could do it as long as you don't think you'll have to owe. That's my vote.

If all you are waiting on is the SS card then I would say go ahead and file. Then when you amend you will likely get a good refund. It is simple to do.

You should be able to just write in "applied for" in the line where it requests the ssn and not have to amend it. You may at some point get a letter from them wanting the # but by then you should have it and you can just write a letter back to them with the information.
