I guess it depends on where you live. I make more than that as an admin, but we live in the Bay Area where 50K (though you CAN survive on it) isnt really that much in terms of being "comfortable". I'm considering changing jobs because I know I can make much more money than I am now. Most of my friends make well over 100K (but a lot of them are older). I'm 28 and a good number of them who are younger make more than I do. If I lived in maybe TN making that at in my occupation (and I know that isnt possible outside San Francisco, LA or NY), if I was single even w/o on DP's income, I would be in hog heaven and even able to afford *gasp* a home. Its all about location.
Yep. I'm in the Washington, DC area. It would be very hard for us to own a home, have two kids, and stay out of debt on 50k. On the other hand I have a good friend in a small town in South Carolina. If we could keep our same income and move there we could live like kings!

We have insurance, but I choose to take my children to a doctor that does not take insurance. (a OD with natural healing intrests) Certain kinds of insurance would reimburse for the visit, but since we are in an HMO I pay cash. We pay $140 for 1/2 hour visit. If you assume he works a full 8 hour day 5 days a week that makes well over 500,000 a year. But then you have to subtract all his overhead. I'm sure he makes plenty, but I'd guess at least half of that is going to his malpractice insurance, rent, equipment and paying his staff.

My friend and her family are deeply involved with social justice; it's hard to believe they'd pick this type of doctor (they would not have been able to afford him before the tragedy w/o him accepting ins., that is for sure). But, it sure would explain why she would earn so much. Hmm.
