Soon after that treatment (which we did finish) we got thrush again. This time a smarter doctor recommended that I use white vinegar on my nipples several times a day, change nursing breast pads several times a day, use bras and towels only once then wash them in very hot water, and take a probiotic a couple times each day and open up a probiotic capsule and put some of it on DS's tongue during periods of thrush. I did this and got better faster than with Diflucan. For the past year and a half we haven't had any trouble with Thrush even with the c-section birth of DS2 followed of course with antibiotics--which usually leads to Thrush. We have kept up the only using towels once and washing them in hot water and taking probiotic everyday (just me.) Today I just noticed some signs of thrush. Two days ago I started an antibiotic for Strep Throat. My throat has been almost completely closed so I couldn't take my probiotic. I'm going to open the capsules and wash it down with some water and start the vinegar before it get out of hand. If you are vigilant with doing these things I bet you won't need to take the risk of taking Diflucan. Good luck!!

That's interesting, because I know Diflucan is presribed to most women with thrush. In fact, on the "battling thrush" thread in this forum, many of the women are taking it daily for long periods of time. I know that it can lead to some problems with the liver, but I hadn't heard of any other dangerous side effects.
In response to the OP, I am on the tail end of treating my thrush - had a c-section to deliver my twins. I took two 150 mg. Diflucan, spaced four days apart, but I don't think they did anything. I had a lot of luck with gentian violet. It's very inexpensive and doesn't require a prescription. Kellymom. com has information on how to use it. I also do a vinegar rinse and rub miconazole cream on my nipples after each feeding. I bought a tube of the generic - it's the same as Monistat, which is used for vaginal yeast infections. I remove any residual before each feeding. I change my breast pads each day and boiled my bra - plan to throw it away after the yeast is completely gone and buy a new one.
I also had thrush when I was nursing my older dd, but the Diflucan always wiped it out on the first dose. Unfortunately, it appears yeast has built up a resistance to Diflucan, and it doesn't work as well as it did.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this. It's the worst pain imaginable.
