So after reading this thread, here's my birth kit:

A pretty headcovering (I have hip-length hair that will probably grow another six inches before August and that's my favorite way to keep it up)

My favorite massagers: back massagers and scalp massager

Birth pool (I'm going with the Aquaborn from yourwaterbirth.com)

Hose and adapters

Underwater flashlight

Debris net

Floor liners

Mattress pad

Birth ball

Placenta bowl (I'm getting a large bean pot that after it's done holding my placenta, I'll use for soaking my cloth pads)

Throw up bowl (or several... I hate puking into the toilet and I threw up a lot in my first labor!)

A full-length mirrror so I can watch the birth (I LOVED that with my daughter, it was my favorite part!)

A chin up bar with a pull rope, so I have something to hold when I'm in labor (I craved this all through my first labor)

A crock pot with cloths for hot compresses

Old sheets and towels

36 Chux pads

50 4x4 gauze pads

Herbal perineal wash (I'm using comfrey, shepherd's purse, uva ursi, chamomile, and rosehips)

Peri bottle

Ice packs (rubber gloves with the alcohol solution to keep them slushy, wrapped in thin flannel)

Waterproof cloth mats (I have a friend who makes cloth diapers on Etsy, and she's making me some PUL/flannel mats for me to put down under me while I'm PP so I don't leak on the bed)

Water bottle with a straw

I love this thread! I referenced it for my first hb and am back to add and learn for my 2nd!

Disposable baby wipes (for mama, not (just) baby)- I had a bowel movement at the beginning of transition and wasnt able to wipe myself. I so wish I would have been prepared for this, as well as prepared my husband for this (our MW was not there yet, fast birth). To have these on hand for quick clean ups would have been so nice.

Arnica and calendula tinctures- I added both of these to my peri bottle every time I went to the rest room. It was so soothing and kept me pain free and helped me to heal that much faster.

If you live in an apartment or townhouse with a parking lot give the MW your parking spot.

That way if your SO or someone else has to dash down to her car for something you know where it is.

What is Rescue Remedy?

Rescue Remedy ROCKS! It's a Bach Flower Remedy that's a combo of 5 flower essences that helps relieve stress. It comes in a small bottle w/a dropper or a spritzer. Found in health food stores. I like the kid version personally cuz the base is glycerin instead of alcohol. I carry it in my purse all the time.

slightly OT, but why does the placenta have to be saved/examined?

I don't have a midwife or anyone and am planning on a UC - do i need to save the placenta for anyone for any reason?

Not Sure exactly which Post you are referring to, but the Placenta needs to be examined after Delivery to be sure no pieces, including the sac, were left or broken off/still attached inside your body. That can lead to hemorrhaging. And Some people save the placenta for dehydrating, encapsulating or consuming in another way. There are GREAT benefits to Consuming the placenta, including Hormone and Mood stabilization, easing post-partum bleeding, and Breastmilk Production. Some people choose to save the placenta for sentimental reasons, (It Nourished your child for 9 Months!) and plant a tree with it in the ground below (It's a great garden fertilizer, but beware dogs or wild animals might sniff and dig it up.)

I just Tossed Mine. Didn't even Look at it. It was a Pain in the Ass to get out. Literally. My Midwife examined it, then I think she took it to dispose of...
