I would remodel or even tear down if I could afford it. We looked into this same issue with our house, and it would cost so much to remodel that tearing it down would be a less expensive choice. our house is much older and has signficant problems, though, so we are in a different situation. We have a ridiculous floorplan but a house that backs to a lovely creek in the middle of an urban area on a street with lots of little kids -- packed with AP parents!!! -- and lots of things within walking distance, including a library. Our neighborhood has block parties, Christmas carolling where we all go carol each other, playgroups, etc. I hate our local school but at least two other AP families here plan to homeschool.

So I feel for you. It's so hard to live in a house that is soooo out of sync with your needs in a hood that is perfect for your needs. It's hard to explain, there is something so unsettling about that.
