Leftover wonder bread

Thread Starter
Personally I never buy wonder bread. DH only eats rye and I usually like sourdough. However a friend came up to visit and make me lunch a few days ago because I am hugely pregnant (due today), which was wondefully kind. She brought up this whole wheat wonderbread with her and left it for us to eat. I can't bring myself to eat it plain, as toast or for a sandwich. I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe that would use sliced bread. I guess I'm thinking like a casserole or a bread pudding or something. It's taking up a lot of room in my fridge right now and I'd like to use it up before I get fed up and just toss it. Like I said Dh won't eat it, and I already have a full loaf of sourdough that I prefer. Thanks for any ideas.

umm..feed it to the birds. It's winter, they're having a tough go at things.

I would put it in the freezer or make bread pudding with it. I often find cheap bread on sale and freeze it for bread crumbs.

Tear up six pieces of the bread, throw it in a bowl, and add:

1# cooked crumbled suasage (or turkey sausage)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
4 cups of milk
6 eggs beaten
1 Tbsp dry mustard

Bake in a casserole dish for 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees and voila - breakfast casserole!

I just made this bread pudding recipe last week, it was delicious!

3 cups dry bread cubes
1 1/2 cups applesauce (I just used fresh apples and mixed cinnamon and nutmeg with it and mashed it up a little with a potato masher)
1/8 tsp cinnamon
dash nutmeg
2 Tbsp butter
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
dash salt

Preheat oven to 350. In a buttered 8"x8"x2" baking pan, layer half the bread. In another dish, combine applesauce with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Spread over bread cubes. Layer remaining bread cubes on top and dot with butter. Combine egg, milk, sugar, vanilla and salt. Pour over mixture. Lightly sprinkle cinnamon over top. Bake 55-60 minutes, until a knife inserted just off center comes out clean.

I served it with whipped cream topping, it was sooooooo good!

Maybe use it in stuffing?

Thank you for this thread! We had half a loaf of white bread leftover (we ate bbq last week, and it's the only time we eat white bread) that I didn't want to throw away.

I'm in a mom's group, nad every 6 weeks or so, we take a dish to share for breakfast. I was able to make a breakfast casserole and put it in the freezer to have for the next time my week comes up. Thanks for your frugal ideas!

I would put them in the oven, dry them out and grind them up as bread crumbs. I double bag them, and stick em in the freezer till I need them. So much better than store bought!

Here's a recipe that might work (depending on your preferences). I'm eating it now, actually, and it easily adapted to organic. I like to use it whenever we have leftover bread-pretty much any kind works, too.

6 T. Butter
6 T. Flour
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 cup milk
Cooked chicken
Bread

Melt butter and flour, salt, and pepper until a paste is formed. Slowly add chicken broth and milk. Heat until thick and boiling. Add as much cooked chicken as you desire.

I actually add more pepper and usually leave out the salt (or let people add their own when served).

How about french toast? Dip in egg and toss in buttered pan. Easy peasy

French toast, breadcrumbs, croutons. Or throw it in the freezer for a "just in case" loaf down the road if your out and can't get to the store.
