Invisible threads are the strongest ties. --Friedrich Nietzche

Fact of the Day:

Why do people do good? A new scientific study suggests that it's not just for an emotional reward: people may actually act selflessly because they're acutely tuned into the needs and actions of others. For decades, psychologists and neuroscientists have puzzled over the tendency of humans to engage in altruistic acts -- defined as acts "that intentionally benefit another organism, incur no direct personal benefit, and sometimes bear a personal cost." The bottom line, says Duke University professor Scott Huettel, is that altruism may rely on a basic understanding that others have motivations and actions that may be similar to our own. "It's not exactly empathy," he says, but something more primitive. [ more ]

Thanks to Dan B. for this!

How the media operates.
It's all about the messenger, right?

Two boys are playing hockey on a pond in a Chicago Park when a crazed Rottweiler suddenly attacks one of the boys. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his hockey stick, shoves it under the dog's collar, twists it and breaks the dog's neck, saving his friend.

A reporter is standing by, sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. Young Cub Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal, he starts writing in his notebook.

"But I'm not a Cubs fan," the little boy replies.

"Sorry, but since we're in Chicago, I just assumed you were," says the reporter and starts writing again. Sox Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack, he writes in his notebook.

"But I'm not a Sox fan either," the little boy replies.

"Sorry, but since we're in Chicago, I just assumed you were," says the reporter and starts writing again. Bears Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack, he writes in his notebook.

"I'm not a Bears fan either," says the boy.

"Oh, I assumed everyone in Chicago was either for the Cubs, Sox or Bears. What team do you root for?" the reporter asked.

"I'm a Colts fan," the boy replies.

The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes: Little Indiana Bastard Kills Beloved Family Pet.

wow, kdliam, way to turn an inspirational thread into cynicism and resignation!

Back to the inspiration. What does inspire those on this forum to take actions that require courage and don't seem to "pay" in the usual sense of that word?
For me, I consider it a privilege to speak for those who have no voice. I have been down and out in my life and others have "been there" for me. When I'm acting on behalf of others I have a deep sense of personal fulfillment. When it's all about me, my life sux.

The reason I do it is it because I think parents want to do the best for their children, and some believe that RIC *is* and so I come along and educate, mostly my friends, but so far I think I have saved one future penis!!!

Also, I always protect the interest of the child and not of the parent(s). I support child safety seats until they can fit in a seat belt (in TN the law is booster seat till 9 yrs old or {maybe nd, I'm not sure} 90 pounds, I would have been in a boost in high school). I haved went off on someone who didn't strap their infant in, I was more than angry with Britney when she did what she did, I just root for the kids. That's hwy I do it.

No, I don't receive any payment, if anything I'm running a defecit. I lost a friend overthis, and my family (not xh's tho) think we're crazy for not circing.

So long winded, I appologize.

well i thought it was funny and it made me feel good to read something truthful (about the media) for a change. It helps people/Intactivists to understand why media wont cover this movement. Perhaps it doesn't directly inspire - but it illuminates a huge problem we face, which may inspire someone, somehow, to figure out how we can get into the news.

Perhaps I sould rename the thread "random thoughts"?

I really didn't know where to put it anyway....wanted to share.
