My DD1 who was 3.75 years at the time had oral sedation last Sep to fill 4 cavities. We were not given the option of GA, or it was oral sedation and fix everything all at once or do it over 4 separate visits. This was a very hard choice for me to make. The month before, DD1 had fallen and pushed back three of her teeth, 2 were so damaged that we had to extract them.
: It was not a pleasant experience and I wanted to spare her anymore pain but be safe at the same time. The dentist would not work on the child if the child would not cooperate, so no papoose boards, which is what I wanted, I did not want DD1 in one.
I was comfortable with certain drugs, and those happened to be the same ones that my dentist used, I was not comfortable with Versed used in an office setting, it tends to be very short acting, and I have seen adverse actions with it when I worked in the hospital. I really didn't think it was going to work. DD1 only weighed 25 lbs so her dose was very small, and she spilled a good portion of it. We sat in a dark room with her, and she just chatted away the entire time, she walked back to the room with me, I'm thinking "this is never going to work". The dentist asked if he could give her a little nitrous oxide, I oked it. DD1 was out in 30 seconds, she stayed asleep the entire time, we woke her up when they were finished, and she was perfectly fine. She was running around within 30 minutes, I kept a very close eye on her the rest of the day, but other then her having a sore mouth, she had no side effects.
