Yesterday, my right breast was extremely sore and had streaks on the underside. I did the hot/cold compresses, nursed practically all night, and rested. My fever went up to 102.9 and I was miserable. Finally my fever broke and I feel better. There is still pain in my breast, but the streaks are gone. Now it is just red. Am I in the clear or do I still need to worry? I have to take my son to the doctor today so do I need to make an appointment for myself? I really do not want to take antibiotics b/c every time I take them I get a yeast infection. Yuck!!!!! any responses are appreciated, thanks

I'm not sure about your question but i'm battling my first ever case of mastitis as well so you're not alone. lol I am, however, on meds and it's getting better slowly. My doc told me NOT to nurse my DD on the side that was infected, but i've determined that he's an idiot and have been nursing her anyway. lol
I would say that if the streaks are going away, that means the infection is too. My red streaks went away and now there's just a little pain right after I nurse.

Bumping this up for you. I personally had streaks, and felt like I had the flu, so I made a doctors appt right away to get on the antibiotics. But I totally understand not wanting the antibiotics.
Keep on nursing on that side, and I am sure someone will help you out with a natural remedy on here!

Thanks ya'll. The thing is, I don't really feel as if I have the flu. Yesterday I felt really tired and sick, but today, I don't feel that bad. I feel drained of energy, but I'm not quite as sore and I don't have a fever. I just don't know. I looked on kellymom.com and am following some of the advice. I am taking garlic and bought some fenugreek seeds, just have to figure out how to use them. I guess I will wait it out and see if I feel better tomorrow or not. Thanks.

JSUPANICH- good job using your instincts mama! You are most certainly supposed to nurse baby on the infected breast. The more you keep the breast emptied, the fast you can help get rid of the infection. Offer the infected breast first and pump in between sessions.

Thanks. lol I didn't think that seemed quite right so I did some research on my own and asked a few friends who had mastitis before and everything I read and my friends said matched, so I stuck to that. I think my doctor is a quack anyway, this isn't the first time he's given some off the wall information.
