help with cat pee!

We are lucky to have a beautiful and friendly male cat who is fixed, but pees outside the box when he gets angry -- we have 2 male cats so the one pees because the other is dominant. I have just chalked my life up to cleaning it up, since we are definately keeping both of my guys! But I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to neutralize the smell without having to use expensive stuff. we have used "nature's miracle" in the past but I was wondering if there was some way to mix up a solution of my own? or, haha, has anyone had any success with gettting a cat to stop peeing outside the box?

Thanks!!

My sympathies! I've only used Nature's Miracle on carpeting/floors. I've found soaking clothes in a basin of water and a little detergent for several days takes care of clothes.

Do you think your cat is happy with the litter situation? Maybe he'd like different litter or a litterbox in a different area of the house. Do you have separate boxes for each cat? Cleaning the boxes every day seems to be necessary in our house.

I know it's frustrating and can be very exhausting to deal with cat pee issues on top of all the other obligations you have. Best of luck!

yes, he is less than thrilled with the litter situation right now-- I'm pregnant with baby #1 (which could be a factor) and dh is changing the litter box- but definately not as much as I used to (definately a factor) I worry that he'll pee more once the baby is here. oh well! such is life I suppose. :

Vinegar vinegar vinegar!

It STINKS but once it dries and the stink is gone, no more cat pee smell! I keep gallons of it around in case my kitties pee on something, we were having problems with them doing so a short time ago.

congrats on the new babe! how are the cats taking it? I will try vinegar-- do I just saturate the area with it and wait for it to dry?

Thanks! The kitties are doing fine, they're even more loving. They pretty much ignore the baby unless he's crying, then they sniff him curiously.

Basically what you said is what I do. Make sure you saturate the area thoroughly, let sit for a few minutes, then put an old towel over it and step on it during the day or stand on it for a minute or so to soak up as much as you can, then let it dry. It helps a lot to air out the house too. :

more links than you can shake a stick at

This site will help you figure out why your cat is peeing outside the box and what to do about it.

Do you have a box for each cat plus one? That might be the best way to ensure each cat gets his own box.

thanks! I checked out the links and definately will give some of the ideas a try. I bet it is a combination of problems-- my husband not cleaning the boxes enough, the cat associating the box with a negative experience, and his dislike of the litter we're using. we're moving to a new house on monday, so I think I will start with a new litter box and a new litter (I'll try a bunch to see what he likes before we move) and then just harass my husband to keep it really clean. Hopefully he'll associate the new house with happy litter box thoughts!

I can dream, can't I! haha
