Hello writing mamas!
I was wondering if a few of you would be kind enough to read this through and give me your critiques. I am applying to a Master's in Elementary Ed. program and am struggling with my personal essay. I have no idea how long the essay is supposed to be. I've made several attempts at writing it and have finally come to the conclusion that in order to convey my dedication to the program and my passion for teaching, it will have to be far more personal that I had originally intended. However, now I'm concerned that it's too personal -- heavy on emotion and light on powerful "this is why I want to teach and this is why I want this program."
When I spoke to the Director of Admissions at the Schl. of Ed. a year or so ago, she said that they're looking for applicants with a clear "drive, passion and ability" for teaching, not necessarily the highest GREs (thank God! 'cause I'm terrified of the GREs!!). I've tried to convey that in my application and know that my course-work has reflected this.
These are the instructions from the application:
Personal Essay
Please describe your career aspirations and why you have chosen to apply to the School of Education at the College of William and Mary and the particular field you plan to study. Your essay should describe your past experiences, both academic and volunteer or work-related, that are relevant to graduate study as well as the professionalism and perspectives that you will bring to your program. In support of your candidacy, please provide additional information concerning such areas as leadership potential, collaborative skills, and propensity to engage in reflective practice.
I've procrastinated too long and my application is due Feb. 1. If you have a chance between now and then to take a look at my essay and offer your critique, I'd be so grateful!
I'll post the essay as a response to this because I don't know if I can attach a document here.
Thank you, in advance, if you're willing to give this a look!
xoxo
