dairy intolerance?

Asking on behalf of my sister who has a 3 1/2 week old?

She wants to know about the timing of dairy consumption on her part and tummy upset on behalf of baby. She generally has some milk in her cereal in the morning. Around 6pm DN tends to have a very rumbly tummy. Not to the level or vomiting or anything, he just seems to have more gas and she can hear his stomach making lots of noise. He also gets pretty unhappy, though she is able to eventually console him with burping and laying him with his belly on her legs.

Her instinct is that the evening reaction is the result of her morning cereal. She is going to try to look for rice milk this afternoon and try that instead.

So the main question, could there be that much of a lag between her dairy consumption and his tummy reaction?

For me, I could see a reaction at almost exactly 3 hours. You could search on kellymom.com for more information. Probably eliminating dairy and monitoring would be the best way to figure it out.

From what I understand, it could be a few days (weeks?) until the dairy is out of their systems.

Sounds like it's very possible that dairy is the culprit. Sometimes my ds doesn't respond to dairy until the next day. Like the pp said, kellymom.com has great information on food sensitivities in infants.
It can take up to three weeks for the milk proteins to leave the mother's system, and then another three weeks for it to leave the baby's. However, many see a difference in their baby within a few days of quitting dairy.

There can be a 2 week "lag" :

Many babies are sensitive to cow's milk. It can manifest as fussiness, gassiness, skin rashes and mucousy poo among other things. If her baby really is sensitive to dairy she will need to completely eliminate dairy from her diet, including cheese, butter, even whey and casein. It's not the easiest thing in the world to do but it's worth it for the change she will see in her baby. My ds had skin rashes, mucousy poo and a lot of gas until I cut out all dairy and he's finally starting to get better and he's so much happier.
