I just picked up my pump from WIC, it's a Medela Lactina Select. They gave me an Ameda Hygienikit with it. It doesn't have the 'piston' thing at all. Will this work? I haven't tried it yet because we're trying to clear up thrush and I didn't want to deal with disinfecting it, so wanted to wait til next week to try it. Do I need to go back for more parts?

No this will not work. You need the piston to make the lactina work.
I THINK that the ameda parts will go onto the lactina piston, but don't quote me on that. I've used both, and I like the Ameda parts much better than the Medela ones. Much easier to clean.
Good Luck.

My guess is you might need to "jury rig" the Medela tubing to fit the Ameda Hygenikit.
When I had DD1 2 1/4 years ago I had my sister's then 9 year old Medela PIS. I was hesitant to invest in a new one at least until I had a sense of whether I could make a go of it (I now realize what losing mentality that was). The hospital LC gave me an Ameda Hygenikit which I was able to use without any special measures.
When I replaced the PIS with a new PISA the new Medela tubing was more rigid and had hard plastic connector ends. DH was able to get the tubing to fit the Ameda Hygenikit by taking some of the old flexible tubing, cutting about an inch off and placing it on the end of the tube. So the part that actually fit on the Hygenikit is the flexible tubing. It took some effort to work the one inch tubing onto the hard plastic end but it was well worth it.
I don't think the set up I have compromises suction at all. And I'm glad I never had to learn how to deal with the Medela accessories. They look way too busy and fragile (the silicone disc / membrane in particular looks too easy to lose or damage). And I have the benefit of using the "closed system" hygenikit which saves the aggravation of having to clean the tubes out.
So, even if it turns out that they gave you the wrong kit, unless they make you exchange it for a Medela setup (which would be nice to have as a backup) you might want to find a way to make it work.

Not the exact same pumps, but for posterity sake - I broke the motor of a Ameda Purely Yours, and tried the tubing & flanges on my Medela Pump In Style motor just for kicks. I didn't like the tubing/flanges on the PIS, but loved the ones on the PY. Anyway - it worked great! Still does.
Different pumps, though.
