foreskin stuck?

My ds is 6 mo and intact...when I changed hid diaper this morning, I noticed that the tip of his penis (glans?) seemed to be showing...it's really red and shiny. I called the after-hours nurse triage, and was told ust to wash it and call my ped when they open. He doesn't seem to be in pain or anything.

anyone have any thoughts on what this could be b4 I call the dr? there isn't any fluid, although there is a teeny tiny little white bump on the glans.

thanks!

It is possible for you to gently pull the foreskin back down over the glans? If it stays retracted, it could swell and cause a condition called paraphimosis, which is very painful and would likely lead a doc to recommend circ (even though it is NOT required to resolve paraphimosis!). The white bump on the glans is probably a harmless cyst. I wouldn't worry about it. If you can pull the foreskin back down, no need to call the doc. Just give him lots of baths over the next few days and put some breastmilk on the tip of his foreskin.

Although it is unusual to be retractable at this age, it is possible, but even if it is retractable, please DO NOT retract your son's foreskin to clean under it! Regular baths will be more than enough to get it clean!

: It will probably readhere since he is so young.

I would put it back the way it's supposed to be and pretend I saw nothing! You want it to stay down and closed, because there is a greater chance of UTI if his urethra is exposed to feces in his diaper. The glans is supposed to be red and shiny- that's the normal state of things in an intact male. If you've only seen circumcised penises before, you'll be used to it being just 'skin-colored' and dry looking. The intact male is quite... colorful.

You know, I was just thinking. How red was it exactly? THere's red and there's RED. Blood red is a sign of something not right, imo. If it's an angry red, not just a dull red, then that w/ the white bump is making me think yeast. Get started on probiotics and give him some podwer on your finger as well (try to find dairy and soy free since he's so young if you can. And in the meantime use some Monistat or other 7 day otc feminine yeast infection cream on it. Just a dab on the tip of his penis (do NOT retract to apply it) and rub it a little.

If it wasn't an angry red then ignore what I just said.

Gently slide the foreskin back over the glans then leave it alone. It could be that his foreskin is on the short side of normal and that makes it creep up. I wouldnt call the dr unless you see signs of infection. ie discharge, swelling, redness.

Please please please do not put Monistat cream on your infant's glans. It burns like the dickens. I know this from personal experience.

A normal glans may be flaming blood red and shiny. I'd be concerned if he seemed extremely irritable. Otherwise I'd leave it alone, be sure to change him often so the glans is not exposed to poop for long, and rinse it with water only (no soap; it can be very irritating like washing your mouth with soap).

You can ask a physician for a swab and culture if you think he may have an infection, but make sure the doc does not handle the baby's penis at all (you can do any penis handling/swab wiping with the doc's direction; many physicians still retract foreskins, and that would be extremely painful).

However, I would recommend not doing anything and not talking to the doctor about it as long as the baby seems happy. Many doctors are circ-happy (due mainly to having personal experience only with cut penises ) and there is a risk involved every time an intact penis and physician meet.

Thanks for all the advice...I've never posted in this forum before

I did end up taking him to my ped's walk-in hours this morning. They have never breathed a word to me about circing, and are totally cool with delaying or non-vaxing, and I feel we have a good relationship.

Anyway, she said she thought it was either yeast or a bacterial infection. She gave him prescriptions for Nyastatin (sp?) and an antibiotic cream b/c she couldn't tell which it was, and wanted to "cover our butts"

I'm not happy about using meds, esp antibiotics, if we're not even sure that he needs them. I did put a little acidolphulus (sp?) on his penis before getting the meds...I have had a lot of probs with yeast in the past, so that seems like a likely culprit. Also, we just moved, and I haven't bathed him quite as often with all the chaos :

I gave him a nice bath in plain old water (meant to add some apple cider vinegar, but forgot), put the nyastatin on him before he went to bed, and I'm hoping everything looks normal in the am, so I don't have to do anything else.

Thanks again, and any further advice would still be much appreciated!

What everyone else said, gently pull the foreskin back down, like it should be, and leave it alone.

If it is yeast the abx cream will make it worse so I wouldnt use it. What she should have done was a culture of the tip of the foreskin only NO retraction to see if anything grew then treat if needed. The nystantin wont hurt so you can use that but I would avoid the abx cream right now just in case.

I said to put it on the tip of his foreskin, not jis glans. I specifically said to NOT retract him to put it on.

I've used Monistat on myself, and it didn't burn.

coulda been a smegma pearl.

Replace foreskin

Do not muck with it

//8wkold retractile DS
////I just replace the foreskin if I notice it's retracted.
///acctually I always have to put it back into place when I change his diaper

Thanks Ashley...

I forgot to mention that before I couldn't just push the foreskin back over his glans--thar's why I thought it was stuck.

Hope your dudes are feeling better, too!
