I know EXACTLY what you are talking about (I think...). I've had this occasional reoccurring pain in what *feels* like the deep joints in my hip sockets (and sometimes by shoulder sockets) since I was 13 years old. It happens almost exclusively at night when I'm lying down. When it hurts, it hurts, and there is seemingly no fixing it except for using it, which is really wierd.
I've never had it officially diagnosed (though I've tried) but personally I think it is a combination of a change in the synovial fluid between the joints and ligament relaxation. I am most vulnerable to it when I've been sedentary for somewhat long stretches of time, like during the first three months of this pregancy when I was bedridden with morning sickness...
For me the solution is daily excercise. It doesn't have to be major. Taking my dog for a little walk seems to be enough to keep the ligaments tightened and the pain at bay. In fact, I've been sleeping exclusively on my side now for the past month and have had no more pain (I feel funny when I sleep on my back so it isn't an option).
Good luck! I hope you feel better!
