Talk to Me about No Poo

So ... talk to me a bout no-poo. I've been thinking about going no-poo for a while, but, frankly, don't know how (I know that sounds silly). So, for you no-poo mommas, answer a few questions for me please.
  • How do you care for your hair without shampoo and conditioner?
  • Do you use anything in place of shampoo?
  • Did your hair go through a period of transition? How so?
  • Got any no-poo hair pics?

I have two squirt bottles. I fill one with a solution of about 1:10 distilled water and BS and a bit of honey and eo, and the other with a solution of about 1:10 distilled water and ACV and some different eos.

Sometimes I use more BS or ACV. In general if you want it cleaner more BS and/or less ACV. If you want it less dry, less BS and/or more ACV.

I find the important thing when using the BS is to scrub gently with the fingers in the same crown pattern that is talked about in the sticky of this subforum.

Then I rinse with water. Then I rinse with the ACV solution, and do not rinse again with water.

After that I treat my hair the same way as usual.

I didn't go through any period of transition except in the sense that at first I had to figure out what system worked for me, and if it didn't work I had dirty hair

No pics, but my hair is the same as it is when I washed with shampoo... only less dry and frizzy.

ETA, have you read old threads about no-poo? There is a ton of information already on this board.

I fell off the no-poo wagon a few months ago - for a few different reasons, but this was my method....

I kept a bag (from Costco) of baking soda in the bathroom, along with a little cup that I'd use to make a slurry of water and b.s. right in the shower - so it sort of looked like milk or Elmer's glue.

I'd scrub in the water/b.s. like shampoo and rinse it out, then about twice a week, I'd also dribble on some apple cider vinegar in water (only about 10% acv) that I kept in an old shampoo bottle. I'd rinse that out as well.

My hair is extremely fine, limp, staticky, and prone to breakage but it was a little flufflier, stonger, and more manageable with the bs/acv routine.

I chose to start no-pooing on the Friday before a Monday holiday. I did the bs/acv thing on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, so my hair looked mostly normal for work on Tuesday, and I only dealt with the greasy look for the weekend.

Now that I'm writing about, I really want to go back to it.

Thanks for the replies! I'll have to give it a whirl. I did try to search the topic, but nothing came up. I think that "no" and "poo" are too short for MDC's search engine.

They are and other words you could possibly search, like apple cider vinegar and baking soda are often abbreviated to acv and bs, making it impossible to search on them also. I try to type out the full word for this reason, don't always do it though

Has anyone had experience with no-pooing highlighted hair? I have dark brown hair with dark blonde highlights.

Thanks,
~Nay

Yup. But just by looking back in the forum and scanning for "no-poo" in thread titles I found a lot

I have been going no-poo for a few weeks (maybe 3) and I love it. I actually found a recipe for no-poo that is 1 egg, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp oil if you have really dry hair (I didn't add this) and bs (I used 1/2 tbsp) all whisked together and sathered on, followed by an acv/water rinse. I am so in love with this! The just bs/water was making my ends feel really dried out and my hair tangled so easily (in my shampoo days I had dry, frizzy ends and an oily scalp.) I think the honey really helped add some moisture to my hair, not sure wha the egg does, though. I think I'll stick with this for me. I didn't really notice a transition period, but I'm in the Army so that means my hair is in a bun M-F anyway.

I'd like to make a mixture like this to keep in the shower for my BF to use; he'll do the whole no-poo thing but he's not going to put any effort into it, i.e. he won't take the time to make a bs/water paste everytime he needs to wash his scalp. You put ratios for your "shampoo" but do you know measurments, like x oz of water, x tbsp of ____ or do you guesstimate? I am completly math dumb and I have no idea how to figure a ratio of stuff, lol. I have a 12 oz shampoo bottle that's about to be empty and I'd like to just use that for my no-poo container. If there's something pre-mixed and ready to use BF will use it without hesitation.

TIA!!

This no-poo thing sounds great. I'm going to give it a try!

I have a very simple method with two components:

1. Apple cider vinegar. I use about 3/4 cup+2 cups hot water for my thick, mid-back-length hair.
2. Lots of combing under hot running water with a ventilated brush (slots between bristles) or wide-toothed comb. This really helps to loosen gunk from the scalp and distribute oils down the hair shaft.

Put ACV in a container and set within reach until you're ready for it. Wet and comb hair until you feel it absolutely could not get any wetter. Add hot water to ACV. Hold some hair away from scalp with fingers, use other hand to pour a little ACV mixture (just pour until you feel it, then stop), and use fingers in hair to rub ACV into scalp. Continue until you've done your whole head. Comb without rinsing. Some oil will come off your hair onto the shower floor, so watch your step! Let ACV stay on hair for a while while you wash other body parts. (Do NOT shave! Vinegar really stings on freshly shaved skin!) Comb while rinsing. Hair will feel slippery, not squeaky-clean, when you're done. Style as desired (barrettes, etc.), squeeze with towel, and let air-dry.

In between washings, I rinse my hair with plain hot water every 2 or 3 days.

My transition period was about 5 months, during which I used ACV every other time and shampoo (followed by leave-in conditioner) in between. After two weeks, I had to switch to a milder shampoo and use less of it. Also, by then I was noticing that my hair didn't feel dirty as soon as usual, so I began washing less often. Finally, my hair couldn't tolerate shampoo anymore (it would turn into an itchy frizzball) so I quit using it altogether. By then I had decreased frequency of washing from every 2 days to every 10! That was more than 2 years ago, and I've used shampoo only once since, when I got lead-based paint dust in my hair.

These days, I wash my hair when it starts to feel greasy and sticky, which is every 7-10 days in summer, every 10-14 in winter. It's much less frizzy than it used to be even when I was using a heavy conditioner. Instead of smelling like shampoo for 24 hours and then starting to smell funky, my hair smells fresh and clean all the time--even if I spend time in cigarette smoke, my hair just flings it off! (It does smell slightly like vinegar until it dries after washing and if it gets wet again in the next 36 hours or so.) It feels very silky and nice.

Hey there!!

I use the combo of 1 tbsp of BS to one cup of water.

Wash with that and rub my scalp good then rinse with water.

I then rinse my hair after that with a 1 tbsp avc and water mixed combo and rinse after that!

I want to try it, but my hair gets so greasy and stringy if I don't wash it with shampoo every day. I also use conditioner daily.
Do you have a smell with ACV?
I use gel for my hair. Here's an example of the "Emo cut" (really bad pic, it was taken to show off the hand-knitted sweater I'm wearing) http://xcb.xanga.com/0d4d5a11d713510.../b74135927.jpg
If you can't see the picture, it's short in the back, about an inch, and then in the front it's chin length. I don't know if there's a name for it besides the "emo cut."
How can I get the gel out of my hair with no shampoo? I use bs along with shampoo about twice a week (but shampoo every day).
