I am bumping this up cause i have a DS who is 2/5 yr old with this issue. He used to go without to much problems. I mean he would grunt and strain, and the like for a few hours but he would pass his stool within a 2-3 days without problems, and it was always soft. I started askign the ped about this almost a year ago, and the again on his 24 month WBC. She told me then that it was probably due to him sitting flaton his butt (he is still in diapers 99% of the time) and that was counter productive, so he had to strain alot to move the stool cause he was basically pooping like a newborn.
About a month to a month and half ago (last week in august) , it hit crisis point, He went about a week (around 5-6 days) without a poop. Then one day he stopped eating, that day he was miserable, crying, laying on me,and then getting down to try to poop. he had vommited a bit (he had another time that he was this way as well, but just as i was about to call his doc, he passed a huge, but very very soft stool. Then he was going every 2-3 days again, so i thought it was ok) He had staining, and some loose stools coming out, but he still strained and was lathergic and I knew there was still something in there. So, i had to call the ped oncall (this happened on a weekend of course) they suggested miralax. Well cause my baby was in pain i thought nothing of it and quickly ran to the store. (well actually my DH went to get it) I gave 1 dosage or 1 tsp, and 20 mins later we had poop (probably coinsidence) Then a few days later he started to strain again and getting whiney so i called his ped (thankfully a business day) adn they told me to give the miralax until we got to runny poop signaling that he was cleaned out. So after 3 dosages of miralax, and 6 poopy diapers later. i felt he was clean, so i stopped it. He was doing fine, pooping every 2-3 days with grunting and straining but at least passing it.
Then BAMMM 3-4 day hits and he still hasn't passed a stool, so i call for an appt. My ped suggests to do miralax every 3rd day of no stool. I was a bit leary of this, as i didn't think it a good idea to use a chemical to help my son poop on a reqular basis like that, i mean i coudl understand for emergancy usage. I asked if there were any worries about dependancy on the miralax, i was told there was no way he could become dependant, cause it wasn't a stimulate laxative. Then I asked about hte safety (at that time i was not told it was not FDA approved for pediatric cases) I asked if he needed to see a GI, i was told that i could get a referral, but would be told to do the same thing, and would have to wait months to get in to them, cause this problem was soo common, and it was put at the bottom of the priority pile.
After doing alot of research i've heard both good an bad about Miralax. I am waiting for my membership to be accepted on the Yahoo miralax group, cause i'd reallylike to see what they have to say. I have not used the miralax since last Thrusday(10/04) I had given 3 dosages of that (1 dose on the wes before, adn then 2 dosages of miralax on thrusday per my peds advice even though i was not happy to do so. but he needed to poop, so i did it) I got 3 diapers of poop.
We (my DH and I ) are both leary about usign this long term, so my quest begins. I have started my son on ground flax seeds in fruit smoothies or in his milk (how ever i can get it down him) flax seed and oatmeal cookies that i bake. flax oil (on the days that i can't get him to take the flax ground) plum juice and juicy juice, water, kid lax (just bought that stuff today cause it had been 4 days since a BM)
I started the flax therapy on that Friday after the peds appt, and i had done the research. On monday (10/08) he had a great BM that was soft and squishy and very substainal (actually it was 2 BM's but he started grunting agian when i went to change him, so i left him alone ) he barely had to strain to get it out, and didnt' seem to be in pain. I felt i had won a small battle in this pooping war. Then i started second quessing myself and getting really worried recently when we approached day 4 since that monday BM with no poopies and no trying from my son (wellno real tryign anyway, I mean i aske him to try to poopy, and he "tries" KWIM) each day that went by the more panicky i became. I have a bottle of miralax (same bottle i bought the last week of august when all this started) sitting here, and i was just about to use it, when someone on another thread suggested Kidlax. So off to the HFS i go to get that. I give 1 capsule (i break apart the capsule and pour the powder into his juice) after his nap, and at 4P i get a small poop. Then at 5:30 i get a bigger and more substainal poop and it was nice and soft and squishy. Again relief for me (and my son i imagine) and now i'm on the bottom of this roller coaster again. I have no idea what to expect next. Will he poop tomorrw, will it be 3 days from now, will i have to give him miralax again. I donnot want his intestines to get stretched out. BUt i also donnot want my son becoming depedant on miralax to help him stool.
I've read on the childhood's pooping woes thread about kids being on miralax for years. and when the parents reduce or try to wean them off the drug they are often times right back at square 1. I dont' want that to happen. And not knowing of the true safety of Miralax in kids,c ause there has been no long term study done on the effects of this drug. it worries me. But it also worries me that i'm doing the wrong thing by doing the natural approach and not listening to my ped's advice of giving it to him after the 3rd day of no stool.
I've won 2 small battles in a bloody war. With my son, his only consistancy is his utter lack of consistancy and it's been that way from day one with his BM's. After he passed all him meconium (sp) he went 7 days with no BM. I was diagnosed with a true lack of supply issue and he was put on Formula, where he would have a soft BM every 1-2 days, sometimes 1-2 x's a day.
Even when first started on solids, i could always control the frequency of stools with his diet. Up untill he was around 22 months he ate prunes with no problems (no he simply flat out refuses to eat them, no matter how i try to hide them)
Then i was still able to controll it with diet somewhat up until the last week of august when that first crisis point happened.
I just hope we are doing the right thing here. I really hope that like the PP i will see soem big changes in his pooping patterens. He has only been on the flax for a full week (well a week and 1 day ) and has gone 4 days between poops. I hope it gets better i really do.
