Lip Balm

BY willow83

3/4 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter
1 1/2 Tablespoons Almond Butter (or other liquid oil)
3 Tablespoons Shea Butter
2 1/2 Tablespoons Mango Butter
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon Candy Flavoring Oil or Essential Oil
Directions
1. Melt Bees Wax, Shea Butter, Mango Butter and Cocoa Butter on stove over low to medium heat. Make sure temperature gets over 180° F.
2. Remove from heat , add oils.
3. Stir. Fill lip balm tubes or pots.
Makes about 13 lip balm tubes.

I used the recipe you found last winter and it was great!

First, the recipe you listed above is in volume measurements and cosmetic recipes should always be done according to weight - not volume. The recipe I'm posting is in weight, not volume so you'll want to use a scale that measures in ounces.

Also, I don't care for shea butter or mango butter in lip balm. They tend to turn grainy after they've been heated and solidified agan. It seems to happen over time - sometimes weeks or months pass and then your lovely lip balm all of the sudden has annoying grains in it. Cocoa butter doesn't seem to do this as much as the others although, I have had the rare balm with cocoa butter turn grainy.

Personally, I don't use butters because of this. But, here is a simple recipe using what you have:
20% Beeswax
25% Coconut Oil
15% Cocoa Butter
40% Avocado Oil
Add flavoring as desired at about 1%

So, for a 10 oz batch, you can do:
2 oz beeswax
2.5 oz coconut oil
1.5 oz cocoa butter
4 oz avocado oil
.1 oz oil based flavor or lip safe essential oils

Michelle,
I just realized that your recipe calls for cocoa butter. I do not have that. What can I use in substitution? TIA!!!

Ack! Sorry - I read it in the recipe you posted and just assumed you had it. Hmmm, let me see. Since you don't have a brittle butter, let's reformulate. You need a firm butter. You could try replacing it with shea but, as we talked about before - shea can go grainy and it's really unpleasant to spread grains on your lips. How about palm oil? Can you get your hands on palm oil? The spectrum brand of shortening is 100% palm oil - most any HFS will have it.

If you can get palm - here is another option:
50% VCO
25% Beeswax
15% palm
10% avocado or apricot oil (personally, I love avocado in lip balm)

You can even go as simple as:
54% Beeswax
27% VCO
19% avocado

Please keep in mind too that what I might like in a lip balm others might not - you might like yours softer or harder, shinier, silkier etc..... Start out by making a very small amount. If you find it's too hard, add a little more liquid oils, if it's too soft, add a bit more beeswax. I tend to formulate for my climate - I'm in the Phoenix area where it's warm pretty much all the time. If you live in a cold climate, you can get away with formulating a softer balm.

hi, michelle!

on that second recipe in your last post..is the beeswax and vco switched? wouldn't 54% beeswax make an incredibly hard balm? now i could see 54% vco....just curious....

Made a batch last night...I like it. Not in love with it. So....I will keep trying... a little of this, a little of that, etc....

Hi Carrie

No, the last one is right. It doesn't have any hard butters and only VCO which has a low melting point so it needs more beeswax. I've actually tried a version of this with another oil instead of avocado and it turned out great

cool....i've just never heard of that high of beeswax...my base recipe has no hard butters in it and i only use 21% wax....my butters/solid oils include avocado butter, vco, and lanolin.

Sounds like you are using more hard oils so you could keep your beeswax down. Avocado butter, vco and lanolin are all more solid than say avocado or apricot kernel oils which are liquid so you could use less beeswax with them. The only firm oil in the one I posted is VCO, so the beeswax would have to be upped to compensate for the lack of butters or harder oils.

Sounds like such fun! I know someone who makes them and she is so awesome I rather just buy hers. She's super nice and even let me request my own flavor (I feel like I must have orange lavender)
Perhaps one day I'll make some myself, until then I'm enjoying reading about you guys!
