All my boys started with a bit of banana, for no particular reason.

Going to start with a banana, as well (as the teeny tiny bit of avocado I put in her mouth the other day doesn't count because she immediately pushed it out!)

I'm not sure yet. I thought about avocado, but I can't find any good looking ones right now. So, probably a veggie of some sort.

dh is australian, so Erin's first taste of anything other than breastmilk was Vegemite.

As for "real" food- mashed banana

We'll probably start with an avocado.

What'd she think?!

Another avocado eater here. After he tasted a couple of things, he started grabbing at whatever we've been eating, so now he gets a taste of this and a taste of that.

Ian's first taste of food was avocado. He's also tried sweet potato (seemed to be his fav), reg potato, and a green bean he grabbed. All told though he's had maybe 2 Tbs of food total. I think I might give him a bite of banana this week, if he wants some while I'm eating one.

re: vegemite... the first taste she made the most horrible face & stuck out her tongue the second time, she sucked it right off dh's finger the first time he offered & again the second! :

There's an old wives tail in Australia about women putting it on their nipples to get kids accustomed to it early

I admit the only thing I know about vegemite is from that men at work "he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich". What is it?

So people talk to me about other foods that ok for the first few months...at what age can I just grind up what I have for dinner and let her try that? At what age can I give her grains or oatmeal or ground up meats or cheese and are eggs ok to give a 6 month old? And does anyone make their own baby food and if so how cause I want to.
Yeah, I have a lot of questions!

Vegemite (or the British version Marmite) is yeast extract. It's brown pasty sticky stuff that most Americans think tastes akin to burning tires. I love it though .

ST: I've heard good things about the Super Baby Food book. My library had two copies...but I borrowed it and never opened it, just too darned busy. But there are a few good baby food books around so check out the library, bookstore, Amazon, etc.

Be careful about Super Baby Food, though! It's about ALOT more than baby food and whenever I picked it up to read I always felt like a terrible mother! The writer just has this tone about her and there were so many "tips" on parenting that I didn't appreciate.

That said, there are a ton of great baby food recipes in it!

There are charts out there that tell what you can give when (like this one http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solids2.htm ). But that being said, this article ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9646449/ ) says that the rules really aren't rules at all. And this ( http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedseli...uidelines.html ) talks about not really needing to make baby food at all.

I did make baby food for my dd. Back when she was little, I followed the starting purees at 4mo because I didn't know any better (I'm not even sure if delaying solids was even out there at that point.) Anyway, I would steam or lightly cook veggies, throw them in the blender, portion them into ice cube trays and freeze. Then I'd dump them into a heavy duty ziplock bag and label. Then I'd take out a cube or 2, warm them up and feed them to her. It wasn't nearly as much work as I thought it would be. If I did a batch every other day or so I always had a decent stash. My other trick for when we were going out places was to bring a banana and a plastic bag with a spoon in it. I'd take the spoon out of the bag, peel the banana and put it in the bag, squish it up and then feed her out of the bag. When she was done I'd rinse the spoon off and throw it back in the diaper bag.

I just make something at dinner that the baby can have (too lazy to go through all the prep ect...) but that said DD started much later so it may be different this time.

Kienan has tried avocado (not too thrilled with it) and banana (yummmm)

I have the book Simply Natural Baby Food it is an easy book with lots of good recipes (and vegetarian to boot )

I'm planning on avocado, banana, and then carrots.

For absolutely no other reason than it will make a cute scrapbook page. "A, B, C"
