Foreskin is red and looks stretched out

My son's foreskin is intact. He is almost 14 months old. Lately, his foreskin has been looking really red . . . well, much pinker than usual at the tip. This morning it was especially noticible. DP swears it's just from being in a wet diaper all night. I don't know. The foreskin is also sort of . . .stretched out looking on the end. . . . and today, just so see how far the redness went... i pushed his foreskin back (very very gently, just as much as it would give on its' own. i wasn't forceful at all) and it seemed to go down quite a bit. I'm wondering if maybe his foreskin is just beginning to retract on it's own, and the stretched out appearance is due to that???? and the redness also. I've been putting some diaper cream on it. . . but so far it hasn't seemed to have any effect. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort at all.

I don't know. just wondering if this is normal. My son is the only uncircumsised guy i've really seen much of, so . . um....

i feel very naive, and like this is probably normal. . . but am not sure. ahhh.

thanks for reading my long foreskin ramblings.

First off, just leave it alone. Don't mess with it at all, even a little bit. Even "gentle" retracting can cause skin cracks.

Now, (one of the many reasons that) the foreskin is there to protect against irritation, so it very likely is just a slight irritation and will be gone before you know it.

14 months old.... they are discovering everything, including fun body parts that they can pull & mess with.

If it is still red in a day or two, then you could think about switching laundry soap, stripping cloth diapers and so on, but right now, I would not stress about it at all.

oh. . . . i feel bad. i just read the definition of retraction sticky. i don't know why i never read it before. after reading your response, i started thinking that maybe what i did wasn't really retracting the foreskin. our pediatrician did what i did, actually she has a couple times, and the first time i freaked out, and said something to her about how she wasn't supposed to retract his foreskin, and she said, that that wasn't. i couldn't see any part of the head of his penis,. the skin was just sort of pulled taut. anyway. . . i thought she knew what she was talking about. i'm sad. i didn't know i was doing something i shouldn't have been this morning. . . and also, i guess i should have argued with her further. she said when she did it, she was checking to see if it was clean and we should pull it back just a little and clean it. thankfully. i never really thought it needed cleaning, so i havent' been doing that.

thanks for saying just to leave it alone. i felt a little defensive for a moment, but it prompted me to read that sticky, so thankyou.

My son's foreskin looked like this too the other day, after he had been pulling and stretching it more than usual. I think it's just part of the slow, natural process of growing and separating.

You can put 1/4 cup of baking soda in his bath; it's very soothing to irritated skin. Also, a few drops of breastmilk may do wonders for it. If it's just irritation from the diaper or the beginnings of separation, it will go away in a day or so. If it's the start of an infection, it won't, and you'll see more signs of that. Keep us updated!

Don't feel bad about the retraction. Your doctor was very wrong to instruct you to do that. Good for you for trusting your instincts not to clean him that way! It will be fine, especially since that was the last time you'll do that! You must tell your ped not to touch his penis at the next appointment, and I would print out the AAP care statement and bring that with you to show her.
