My ds recently began eating solids. I didn't want to do it (was hoping to nurse exclusively for 9 months ), but he had all the "readiness" signs: sat up by himself, reached for food on my plate, etc. A woman at LLL suggested I give him a spoon because he might just want to put things in his mouth, but that only held him off for a few days. When I gave him the food, it was like a light went on. He grinned and laughed and was so pleased with the world! At any rate, I'm really curious about when other people started. My son was 2 weeks short of 6 months.

Morgan will be 10 mos. tomorrow and we still haven't really started solids. She eats a few Cheerios or a cracker sometimes (for about the last month or so), but it's more to play with than anything else.

She really hasn't shown any interest, and I'm not in any hurry, particularly because I have horrible allergies in my family. At about 9 mos., she picked up an apple and started taking hunks out of it just like an adult would, so I thought she was ready. I tried giving her some apple a few days later, though, and she wanted nothing to do with it.

Don't worry about not nursing exclusively for 9 months! You followed your DS's cues, and it sounds like he's happy and healthy!!!

I voted 6 - 12 months but it's really been a wide spectrum for each child. My current infant just started a few days ago. Like you, I wanted to nurse exclusively for 9 months but he just really LOVES eating. My second youngest did not eat solids for well over a year! She still gets most of her nourishment from nursing. The other kids fell somewhere in between. I think it just depends on the child. Nursing is still SO important no matter when they start solids. Good luck!

Same time you did! LOL. My ds was ready for food at about 5mos. so at 5.5mos. we went ahead w/ it and he did great! He always has been and still is a good/big eater, loves food!

I said 6-12 months. Amber was so interested in foods and she was really wanting to eat what we were eating! Her first meal was mushhy banana. We video taped it and it was so funny! She couldnt get enough of it! We took it slowly and only inrtoduced new foods in small doses. She is a really good eater!

I started my dd on solids at 6 months, but she really didn't want them. She liked playing with spoons for quite awhile, however, but didn't care about the food. I've heard that for some babies it is the light going on thing that you described, but then others just don't care that much. I stopped offering her solids after awhile because it seemed like a waste. When she could crawl well and pull herself up, she used to crawl over to me and beg little bits of food from me. She really didn't start eating solids on a daily basis until she was about a year old.

My friend's daughter ate 3 meals of solids a day by the time she was 6 months old.
