I don't know if this is the best place to post this question, but here goes...
What do you do with your kids who are allergic to the great outdoors? Do you "send them out to play" anyway, or do you keep them inside? We live in New England and have been cooped up all winter, now that spring is finally here, I am afraid to take my dd outside! We can't even open up the windows to air out the house! I am going to lose my mind (what little I have left!).
DD is four and has lots of environmental and food allergies. We have taken care of most of the indoor issues, although we still need to replace the carpeting with hardwood and make a final decision on the cat (a heartbreaker). The food issues are an ongoing struggle, but it is getting easier and the results have been dramatic. Outdoors really wasn't an issue until this week, although I knew it was coming. If she just got a runny nose and itchy eyes, i would feel bad for her and push her out the door anyway. Unfortunately, she also has asthma. I hate the idea of putting her on steroids to control the asthma or on one of the new allergy medications to suppress her reactions. Pumping all of those drugs into someone so small for so many years just can't be a good thing... But I also hate the idea of being holed up all spring and summer. I imagine the beach is a pretty safe place to be, but you can't do that all day, every day for four months. Plus, she loves the playground and the park. We have always enjoyed family hikes on the weekends, and she wants to go to the zoo and for a pony ride. You get the picture.
Has anyone else successfully dealt with this issue? Any suggestions or information would be appreciated. Thanks.
