I was wondering what everyone is reading? I haven't pulled out any of my pregnancy books yet...usually, I become obsessed but I am trying to be laid back and enjoy this time.

The only reading I'll probably do will be to research the necessity of and alternatives to Rhogam.

Ooh, I'd love to discus this with you. I have had the Rhogam shots with my 2 boys but I am wondering if it is really necessary this time as DH is getting a vasectomy after the birth so we don't want any more kids.

Ok. I know there is a thread about this in the vaccination forum that surfaces every now and then. That thread also mentions a book written by a midwife on the subject. I'll make it over there eventually.

Pregnancy, childbirth, and the newborn The complete guide. - PennySimkin, Janet Whalley, and Ann keppler. really comprehensive.

I am the same way. With baby #1 I was reading everything I could get my hands on and now I haven't read one thing. The books I would recommend to first timers though are:

Ina Mae Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth
Birthing From Within
Susan's Weed Guide for the Childbearing Years (great herbal)
Anything by Aviva Jill Romm (She is amazing!)

I am really trying to stay away from any kind of negative of fear based stuff this time...including stuff on MDC! First pregnancy I was so crazy thinking about a million things every minute and this time I am trying to be so much more laid back.

Childbirth Without Fear by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read. He is THE pioneer of med-free natural childbirth -- book was written in 1939 after he observed different animals giving birth, and started thinking about how it could apply to contemporary women. It's really difficult to find, but my library got a copy somehow! (Okay maybe it was after I begged and pleaded and wrote them letters. Hee.)

I'll also try to get a copy of Sit Up and Take Notice/Optimal Foetal Positioning. It's also out of print, but it's supposed to be the best book out there on OFP.

I'll probably go back through Heart and Hands and Spiritual Midwifery and Birthing From Within.

My first pregnancy I read all those other stupid ones like What to Expect and The Girlfriend's Guide... What a waste! They were so demeaning to women, all about how the doctor knows everything and we know nothing. Gag!

I read The Girlfriend's Guide.... first time and while I enjoyed her humor I was appalled at the advice she gave. Like....bfing does mess up your breasts and don't feel guilty if you want to bottle feed to "save" your perky breasts!

I keep telling dh I am going to write a book in a similar style that actually espouses healthy and whole parenting. It can still joke and lament over the struggles of the journey into motherhood, but with the guidance towards healthy choices, kwim?

I'm also rh-. This will be my 6th child, 3rd homebirth. I just ordered 2 books, Polly's birth book (it supposedly addresses rh-) and Anti-D in Midwifery by Sara Wickham.

THAT is the one - "Anti-D in Midwifery". I'm going to check out "Polly's birth book" as well.

I know! There ARE humorous struggles with being a NFL/AP/"whole" parent! Believe me, when one of my 4yo twins is having a burst of anger and is taking it out on a pillow (because we've agreed it's okay to hit a pillow if he's angry) and I'm sitting there going, "You're being such a wonderful emote-er! I'm so happy to see you hitting the pillow like that!" (as opposed to one of his sibs or the dogs) I think, "Wow, this probably looks REALLY weird to mainstream moms!"

It talks a lot about the development in the womb

Ina Mae Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth!
Fantastic...even DH is reading

I'm skipping around between chapters of:

-- Just a Little Prick by Hilary Butler (re: the harm of vaccinations)
-- How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor by Robert Mendelsohn, MD (what you need to know about how to avoid the doctor)
-- Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron (How to make your own healthy baby food)

They are all excellent.
