Like Papachee, the only activities that work for my son (2) are food, music (kids music not my music) and Magna Doodle. Singing your own songs is an alternative to CDs. I buy old Wee Sing songbooks at thrift stores and use them to jog my memory about long forgotten songs or to learn new ones. He actually brings them to me to "read" meaning sing in the house. You can also make up new lyrics to old songs. Instead of the ants go marching for 10 verses you can have the cheetahs go zooming, the owls go swooping, etc. Right now my son loves the Finger Band song (sung to Mulberry Bush) and I make hand motions with one hand to "play the drum". "play the fiddle" etc. We also did a game based on Is Your Mama a Lama? book (without the intricate rhyming). "Is your mama a lama I asked my friend Mary? No she is not my friend Mary said. She likes to hop and eat flies and says ribbet...etc" and then my son tries to figure out the animal.
