I got a molar that hurts. I'm a big girl and can take it. I can't imagine a little toddler with 2 or four molars coming out, and being told to wait to nurse. I think even I would have a meltdown if the dentist told me to wait a few days to take care of my molar! My girl is 15 months, and she looks big, she walks and jabbers like noone's business. But I take her in my arms to nurse, and she's just a big (BIG!) baby to me. I couldn't deny her the teta just because someone in the store might have a hangup. THat's life. My mama always told me that people will critize you anyways, so you might as well do what is right for YOU. If what's right for you is sitting in the dairy aisle because gentlemen seem to be lacking in society today, then here's a big for ya! Other countries don't have problems with NIP, let's see if we can get the US out of the dark ages!

Glad I could be there for ya ... :

I DO! I certainly don't want my child to see that kind of filth!

Cool

I breastfeed my 18 month old in the store if he wants it. I know I could make him wait, but where I live you never see anyone breastfeeding in pulbic, so I want to help show other women that it is ok to do so.

Yeah...I BF my toddler in public a lot when I was pregnant and huge and got lots of double-takes like, "Wait a minute...isn't she pregnant?" Hmmm... I do it as a "public service" too I guess since I don't see anyone else NIP here either...well, maybe I have seen one other person...sheesh I am sleepy...speaking of nursing - how do toddlers have radar? She is asking so I gotta go!

Good for you mama, good for you!

I would be pretty revolted if I saw someone, anyone, sitting on a food display in a store...period. I'm not high fiving over this.

Good for you! I do love the location, too bad you didn't get a shot of that - a photo of a mama tandeming in the dairy aisle would just be classic!!

and I think your response to the rude lady was just perfect. I am always exasperated by how entitled people feel to make sure you are aware of their petty preferences about how children eat. As if it's your job to take care of their immature needs.

Honey, if the sight of someone fully clothed sitting on a food display would revolt you, you best stay out of every restaurant on the planet. Sitting on a food prep area is about the most hygenic thing that happens there.

I think you may be confused as to what she was sitting on. She was not sitting on a food display or a shelf that held food. I know in my WalMart diary section there is a barrier type thing, about 2 feet tall, maybe 3 inches wide. The food is kept about a foot away from the edge of the case. (This is hard to describe if you haven't seen one before). People are always leaning over, putting their grubby hands, kids mouths, kids feet, adults feet! on the case. Someone sitting, where no benches are available, isn't that far fetched.

Believe me, the place she was sitting is in no way clean and no food is actually touching it.

How ironic and Fabulous for you! The dairy section is such a perfect place for this occurance. I am so happy to hear someone who stood up for herself in the face of ignorance too! There are times, that I want to say something and don't and other times I come up with the perfect response.

Yeah...don't worry, I wasn't sitting on food; like the pp said it was far away from my bum!

Thanks for the support, ladies! And I did more plactivism yesterday by nursing both my kids at Panera Bread. I actually got a smile from a lady when I was nursing my toddler and she asked how far apart my kids are. She is preggo with her third child and has a 1yo...we sat there and talked for like 30 minutes as I nursed...so maybe there are like minded people here - I just need to look for them! OK...my toddler is "helping" my baby over! GOtta go!

Way to go! I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said already!

recently i was in a market with my toddler son. he was hungry, so i sat down where i could -- kinda near the front entrance -- to nurse him. while he was nursing, an elderly man walked in and right toward us. i readied myself for the insults. he marched up close to me, leaned in and said, in his thick accent, "you good mama. breast is best for baby. no bottle. bottle not good -- bad mama with bottle. you good mama." it was such a pleasant encounter. i kinda liked that he wasn't afraid to get near me while my son nursed too.

like many others, nursing in public is part need, part statement. i feel proud on so many levels to breastfeed in public.

I saw your title, remembered the town you're in (i used to live there, parents still in the area) and thought 'WOW, brave woman!' Small towns aren't the most welcoming of things considered 'different' that's for sure.

Kudos to you

Lurker here...

I am an EPer, and I can't say how truly jealous I am that you can even breastfeed, at home, in public, even in the dairy isle at Walmart. Breastfeeding is natural, what is unnatural are those Beer adds, Men's Magazine covers, Music videos(and on and on and on)

I saw a woman tandem nursing in a office supply store a couple of weeks ago, and mind you this is not a big town either. But I made the point to go up to her and to say how beautiful what she was doing was! And she said she was relieved! She thought I was going to make some comment, which is why she was doing it at the end of a isle. I make it a point to tell anyone I see breastfeeding in public, especially anyone with older kids, what a wonderful sight it is. If I didn't, who would? I am still pumping for a toddler at work, and god knows people give me some strange looks/comments when they see me STILL carrying my pump.

What I want to know is what you were doing in Wal-Mart in the first place!? Dont you know its evil!? ha ha ha jk. Ive been known to shop there a time or two myself.. just dont tell anyone, okay?!

But in all seriousness, thank you for sharing. I nursed my 11 month old in the "day care" room at the Y yesterday, and another mom was shocked. She wasn't rude, didnt say anything snide or nasty, she just didnt know that bigger babies were still suppose to breastfeeding! Sad, considering her daughter is around the same age as my daughter. But Im glad that I got to be a positive example for her. Perhaps her next child will be breastfed for longer. And just think of the example that you set by NIP. The more its seen, the more it will be accepted.

Amen. Folks don't want to see half an inch of a breast doing its job, but we're more than happy to drool over the covergirl on Maxim.
