one of the first questions my mom asked me was "are you going to give birth at the hospital or at home?" we weren't planning to mention homebirth for at least another month or two...well, i'm the worst liar in the world, so i just said "home." she didn't freak out at all! she just sort of talked it out, and after about 5 minutes she said that it's probably a good idea! she never said one thing about it being "dangerous" or anything. i showed her my midwife's website and she was in AWE of her experience and is impressed with the level of care it looks like we'll get.

my mom is really coming along! lol she used to shudder at the thought of my nursing adam past 6 months and warn me about "letting him" sleep with us, and now she acts like it was all her idea!

My sister did the same kind of turn around. When I was pg with DS, she said nursing him would "ruin" my breasts. Now she refers to our formula-feeding SIL as "too lazy to even nurse her baby!"

That's great! The first thing my mom asked was "you're not going to get that same horrible doctor are you?" (not my regular OB, the mean guy that I got on -call) And I said "actually I'm going to use a midwife" and she said "good!"

Now MIL isn't likely to like the idea, she's a "do whatever the doctor tells you" kind of person. And last night I had a dream that SIL (who is TTC) decided to have a home birth, and I told DH and he laughed and laughed. It is highly unlikely she'd ever do something like that -- for one thing, her DH would probably be way too worried about the possible mess, she's already told me he'd never allow an Aquadoodle because water might get on the floor And they registered for all white linens...

That's great news! It's really nice to have support from family.


My MIL is a pediatric nurse, I'm just going to hope she assumes we're birthing at the hospital, though I'm hoping to homebirth. Mentioned it last time and got homebirth horror stories. But yay, meeting with the midwife next week!

Yay!!! My mom is cool with homebirth and of course my dad is (his mother was a midwife in Cuba). I do wonder what my MIL will think about it. Not that it would bother me if she didn't agree with it...

Our second child was our first homebirth. We weren't sure how our families would react, so we only told them we were going with a midwife this time. *I* knew that midwives can deliver in hospitals -- in fact, the great majority of the births they attend here are hospital births -- but apparently neither of our families were aware of this, so they just assumed from the get go that we were homebirthing, and never said boo. And we thought it was going to be a surprise! We did end up kind of having a surprise -- S was due Christmas Eve, so my family was coming to visit a couple of weeks before Christmas to have it with us. S ended up being born at home a few hours before they arrived, so he was a surprise for them.
