belly button question

Tonight when chaning Shayna's diaper I noticed that there is a piece of flesh coming out of Shayna's belly button. The cord is drying nicely and looks like it could fall off soon, but this other piece looks strange, like it is growing out of her. It is not dry, rather it is red, and about the length of my pinkie finger nail. Anyone seen anything like this before?

are you putting anything on this? you can try goldenseal if you want or breast milk. I don't have any idea what your describing but I thought I would give you info about antiseptic... a Hernia maybe???

It sounds like it's just a little bit of flesh that is in the process of healing since her cord is about to fall off. If it concerns you, though, it won't hurt to give your ped a call. I know my son's belly button went through a bunch of different stages when it was healing, even after the cord bit came off, it still was a little weepy/oozy - definitely not infected, but more like how a cut can ooze a little if a scab comes off before it's ready. And I was concerned that under the cord looked a little raw, but it healed up fine, I still wondered about it!

Thanks, Liz and p1gg1e. I haven't been putting anything on it. The ped just said let it dry naturally.

I think I found what the belly button growth is. It is called a granulom. Happens in 1 in 500 babies (lucky Shayna!), but is supposedly harmless.

I've called the ped's office just to be safe. I'll keep you posted.

How weird! Lukes was JUST the way you are describing your daughters. I asked his ped about it at the 2wk chek, and although his fell off, there was this flap of skin that still bled, and was very red. I was told too use peroxide, and w/in a few days of applying this at every diaper change, it is all healed up.
