I have a friend in Australia who recently alerted me to this. I live in the US and can't really help, so I thought I'd spread the word. Seems like some submissions would be really helpful.
I'm copy and pasting from her message:
I'm writing a submission to the Dept or Health and Aging for their inquiry into breastfeeding. This is from the Dept's website:
Terms of Reference
“The Committee shall inquire into and report on how the Commonwealth government can take a lead role to improve the health of the Australian population through support for breastfeeding. The Committee shall give particular consideration to:
a. the extent of the health benefits of breastfeeding;
b.evaluate the impact of marketing of breast milk substitutes on breastfeeding rates and, in particular, in disadvantaged, Indigenous and remote communities;
c. the potential short and long term impact on the health of Australians of increasing the rate of breastfeeding;
d. initiatives to encourage breastfeeding;
e. examine the effectiveness of current measures to promote breastfeeding; and
f. the impact of breastfeeding on the long term sustainability of Australia’s health system.”
So far, I've written about the difficulties of conflicting opinions in the medical field and am making mention of how I was being persuaded to switch to formula by medical professionals even after I had expressed a desire to solely breastfeed Elijah. Can anyone think of any other points I could make?
Australians, you can write your own submission as well. Go to: http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committe...ding/index.htm
So far, there are only nine submissions! Considering the submissions close in two weeks and have been open since late November, I find this astonishing.
Well, that's from her message, I just wanted to put it out there. Nine submissions sounds really pitiful. Sounds like an open invitation for Australian mamas to speak their minds about breastfeeding.
