hello oil painting mama's...

Hi everyone. I just found this forum and am very excited.

So I have a question

One day about six months ago I grabbed a large canvas and started to just play, wasn't looking to create anything, so in my fin I squirted baby oil all over the canvas (cringe). Well of course my play time became one of my favorite paintings to date.

But now it won't dry. Any ideas on what I can do?

I'm feeling a bit bummed as I'm having a show at Barnes and Noble in a couple of months and really wanted to show it.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Ooh...that's a toughie. Most hardware shops sell a kind of spray sealant, but I've never heard of anyone using it over baby oil. If you have a spare strip of canvas that you could just stretch with some nails or something, I'd try it on that before using it on your precious work of art! I love spray sealer, though...I did a painting out of toothpaste and food coloring last year (it was so much fun), and it would NOT dry. I used this stuff, and it hardened right up in a matter of hours. I don't know the name brand, but if you just go into a hardware store and ask for a spray sealer, they'll know what you're talking about. Make sure it isn't colored! Sorry I'm kind of late. I just found out about MDC last week.

Hey thanks for the thought.

I love this painting so much. It seems to be drying but in the slowest possible time frame.

I'm coming to terms with it though because as much I would like to show and share it, I'm not sure I could actually sell it.

So it stays in my basement/studio and keeps me company while I work on it.

I will look into the sealing stuff at the hard ware store though. I'm always interested in new tools to use with my art.

I had a problem once of a painting not drying and a friend gave me the idea to put walnut oil on over it. It seemed to do the trick. I was using water soluble oils at the time, but I think it should work with regular oils too.
