I have not seen the movie but I read the book when I was a kid. From what I've seen of the movie clips either they have changed the whole movie or are not giving an accurate account of what the movie is really about. I don't remember it being a fantasy. It's about two friends with rough childhoods who make a fort that you have to get to by swinging over a river. It's been a long time but what I do remember is that one of the friends drown in the river and then it's about the boy dealing with the greif of his friends death. I would not take a 4 year old to see it.

I would like to hear what people who have seen the movie thought. Maybe they did change the story and it would be ok.

I have not seen it yet but I hear it is very true to the book. The fantasy sequences are to show what Jesse and Leslie are imagining. I will take my 4 year old if we make it.

Do you guys ever read moviemom.com? I always do before I take DD to the movies. I was crying just reading the review, so I definitely won't be taking 4.5-yo DD to see it.

I'd read the book before deciding. In the book one of the main characters (a child) dies abruptly.
I read the story as a child and it was so upsetting for me I never read it again until this year. I wouldn't take my dd (6) to see the movie.

Well, we went and saw it tonight. It was nothing like the previews!!

It was a good 10 years-adult movie, but it was not a children's movie at all. Though the theatre was full of people of all ages, but I would say half full of kids 10 and under.

My son (4.5 years old) did not notice that the girl died or the other adult issues. He just kept saying "where is the giant?!" The animated part was like 10 mins (if that) in total. My hubby and I both left sad.

But, it was well done movie. They make you fall in love with all the characters, and the lil girl and lil boy are just so sweet.. so it is very sad when she dies. As a movie in whole it was great, just not really a child's movie as they have marketed it.

From my sons mouth "it was good..." with this look on his face .

It really depends on the child. A couple of us from the "trailer" thread in books and music have taken our 6 yr olds to it and all had great experiences. DS loved it, but he knew the story before we went so nothing was a surprise to him.

It was done so well. When Leslie and Jess first find the rope to swing on and Leslie puts her head back and then asks Jess to do the same as it will feel like flying...it was so magical and I looked over at DS and he was just beaming. A wonderful smile and shine coming off his face. He really understood what an escape their friendship was.

So I wouldn't say it's an adult movie or inappropriate for under 10. You just have to know your child and it always helps if you know the storyline before taking your child to any movie. Trailers are a marketing tool and very rarely show the movie acurately - how could they in 2 minutes?

I LOVED the part with the rope swing.. wow.. I almost cried.. I love the magical innocents in Leslie's and Jess' eyes.: And yes, my son had the same look in his eyes watching that part!

I should say that yes, it would be good for any child as long as the parents think they can sit through a movie that's not like a children's movie. And they know that issues such as money, bullies & death come up. From the trailer it looks like a magical world of fairies and giants.

I truly enjoyed it!

Sounds like my dd. I took my dd to see Charlotte's Web, and she literally sobbed when Charlotte dies.
