need wisdom teeth removed - still nursing HELP!!

For one reason of another, I have not had my wisdom teeth removed even though I had been told there was not enough room in my mouth fot them to fit. Before I was preg with ds, I had an exam and learned that one is sideways. It has now broken the surface and is slowly moving my bottom teeth. I absolutely cannot stop nursing for days following the surgery. My dd still nurses heavily for comfort and my ds is only 4 mos old. I am worried about damaging our nursing relationship. What should I do? Could I pump and dump for a few hrs afterwards and then resume nursing as long as I refused all pain meds? Would this make me a super mean, cranky, in-pain momma? Ok, I'm rambling now! Thanks in advance!

I would ask them about pain meds and just tell them you are nursing so don't want anything that will hurt your kids. I know when I was expecting I had to have dental surgry and had to take meds for the pain I just skipped the ibprofin and took the stuff my OB ok'd

I had mine removed when dd was 9 months old. She wasn't eating any solids at the time. My oral surgeon said that legally he had to tell me to not nurse for 8 hours after, but that he personally thought that if I was feeling fine, I could nurse. He mentioned that women who get emergenc C-sections with general anesthesia nurse as soon as possible. So, I got the general anesthesia, and felt absolutely fine 20 minutes after I woke up. I never had any pain and didn't even need Tylenol for pain relief. I forget the specific type of general anesthesia that he used, but I wasn't intubated or anything. It was done in his office, not in a hospital.

Susan brings up a very important thing to remember. C-sec moms usually have some other meds in their system too (I had a morphine shot right in recovery and then on tylenol-3's every 3 hours after that). I bf right away and the whole time I was in the hospital and no one mentioned anything about the meds and a nursing baby.

Kellymom has good info about the types of meds and nursing. When I had my wisdom teeth out I asked first what they were using and checked it online. It was all okay.

Good luck!

ETA: All the best to you too K's Mom!

ETA2: Take the pain meds. You should be okay.

I got 2 of mine removed when I was 2 wks post partum...was told they would never cause me issues and whammo....issues....

The dentist was swift and handy and got them out without too much work and gave me a script for Percoset (the md who discharged me from the hospital since MW aren't allowed to gave me a script for Vicodin and I took it when I got home for the pain I had and my days old little girl slept so soundly after nursing I called poison control bc I thought I killed her...would never take Vic again nursing....) and I didn't end up taking much of it.....jus tkept the cotton packed in and drank through a straw....what I did take, I took in 1/2 doses.

HUGS!!!!

There is no reason that you cant nurse even if you are put under to remove them. You can request pain meds compatable with nursing and you can find those a www.kellymom.com under the aproved medication list Very few pain meds are totally off limits while nursing.

Here is the section there about dental work. http://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/dentalwork.html

A mother who has wisdom tooth surgery should not need to interrupt breastfeeding at all (except during the surgery, of course). To minimize baby's exposure (and increase mom's comfort), mom can nurse just before she goes in for the procedure. There is no need to wait on breastfeeding afterwards or to pump and dump -- mom can nurse as soon as she feels alert enough to hold baby.
and here is the pain meds page http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/pain-meds.html

The thing to remember about moms nursing soon after C-section is that their milk hasn't come in yet. The baby is getting colostrum in very small amounts. Once the mother's milk has come in she likely has the greater majority of meds. out of her system.

I just had one wisdom tooth removed 3 days ago (local anesthetic) and was given a prescription for vicodin. Of course, since I'm nursing I chose not to take the vicodin. I've taken Tylenol if the pain gets bad enough, but honestly it hasn't been very bad at all.

I had mine removed when ds was like 9 months old. Consult a lactation consultant about medications to take and safe amounts. I was able to take vicodin and and ibeuprophin for the pain. Women who have c-sections take medication for pain and are still able to breastfeed.

I tried to feed ds right before or immediately after taking the medication, that way less of the drug got into him.

I was defnelty happy to get it done though - that is some aweful pain!
