Socks KAL... - Page 3

it didn't even take a full skein to make one you should be good, given i also have a large foot...10 inches long

I bought some Lily Chan superwash in a blue color to do the worsted pattern. Oh yeah, bought some Addi turbos to go with it figured I deserved them since I've been good lately in finishing the projects I start

My grandma is coming to stay with us and she wants to buy me something for my birthday. I think I'll have her buy me some sock yarn for this project. Sorry if I'm the last to start, you don't have to wait for me. I know some of you are ready to go right now. If you are okay me joining in when the yarn comes?

are the sock yarns I find on etsy okay to buy? $14-20 or so right price? also, what is the best blend, all wool, or mostly wool and some nylon or something right?

thanks,
Lisa

I love my 100% wool, but wool with a nylon content is good also!

I'm going to find some yarn today at my LYS. Then I'm ready to cast on!

My little one has been sick with fever for a week so we've been house bound. I'm taking my 6yo to the doctor (ENT) with just he and I today (dh is leaving work early to stay with my sick with fever son) I'm not sure my LYS would carry what I'm looking for, but if there is time today I may run over there. Depends on how my little man is doing and what ds1's doc appt goes like.

thanks for the input on the yarn type!!

I have yarn! Yeah!

My LYS had a swatch knit up of this:

It seemed like it would feel good as socks! And it's worsted weight...so maybe I will actually finish TWO of them. It's not wool--it's 80%cotton / 20%rayon blend. Hope that will be ok.

My dd also wants socks--this was her pick:

100% superwash merino (nice--she has good taste!)

Can't wait to get started...I'll cast on today sometime (hopefully)!

I'm finishing up a pair of socks for a swap, then I'm in! Gotta figure out what pattern I'm gonna do. I'm thinking Monkey, from Knitty, but maybe just a plain stockinette too (I have self-striping yarn).

Me, too. I didn't start this thread as a first-socks KAL, but it's evolved into that and it sounds fun and like a good idea!

I'll be using sock yarn. We might end up at the same pace since sock knitting is comfortable to us already? I don't know.

I'm catching up with posts....what pattern are you all using? Doing silver's class?

Is anyone else doing their socks with two circs, making both the socks at the same time? It will be my first time making socks this way.

Excited to start!

I'd like to join! I've been searching the web just this week for a newbie sock pattern. I've knit longies and sweaters, but no socks and am very much looking forward to doing this!

my sock yarn went in the mail this morning!!

what do you knit your socks on? metal dpns? wood dpns? circulars? what sizes?
Ooooh, I'm trying to decide what to do. I'm leaning towards a pair of worsted slipper socks on 7's, because I know they'll knit up fast. But I just came into a little extra $$ so I treated myself to my first "real" fancy sock yarn... Socks That Rock Puck's Mischief

I suppose I'll take my own advice and make both!

Carolynn--that yarn looks great! I can't wait to see it as socks in progress ...and, yes, I think you should do both!

I was so coveting that colorway a couple days ago. I too am trying to figure out what yarn to get. As they are going to be my first socks I decided I didn't want to splurge on the socks that rock. And I have already spent almost $100 on yarn and needles this month : Don't tell dh!
thinking about buying needles for these socks, but wanting to know.......

what do you knit your socks on? metal dpns? wood dpns? circulars? what sizes?

can't wait for my yarn to come soon!!

who has started?? what yarn are you using? how far along are you?
I finished my first broadripple socks working on the other.

I think I might try doing a toe-up sock. Anyone use the universal pattern on knitty?
I would say start with bamboo dpns if you want dpns or cheap circular(s) if you're going to do ML or 2 circs. I've found more little needles at Hobby Lobby than the Michaels or Joanne's around here. Our newspaper hides the Hobby Lobby ad at the back of the home section, and sometimes there's a 40% off coupon there. (now they just need to start carrying sock yarn!!)
