uncontrollable shivering (in mama)

Anyone have any idea whether this would have anything to do with any of the new mom things? Hormones, breastfeeding, general recovery or maybe the c-section? I woke around 4am today, 6 days after my c-section, and started shivering violently. I didn't have a fever and didn't even really feel cold, so I figured it was a weird fluke. I got up and moved around a bit, nursed the baby, and felt better so I put us both back to bed. I woke up again about an hour later with the same problem. I try taking off my bra, because my breasts feel hot and I think it might be too tight. I put on an extra layer and get back to sleep, only to wake again with the same problem. Anyone ever have anything like that happen, related to birth or not? I'm a little freaked out.

Hmm, I've had the shakes pretty bad when my blood sugar was low. Hopefully another Mama will have some info. for you. Maybe timneh_mom, although it doesn't look like she's posted since Saturday. I wonder if she finally went into labor.
Anyway I hope you are ok!
Did you Google that or anything?

Do you have a fever? Are your breasts sore? If they are hot accopanied by these other symptoms you could have mastitis, a breast infection. It just feels like the flu. But as far as I know you need antibiotics for it.

Thanks for your input! Julieanne's nursing the babe right now, so I'm updating for her. She didn't have a fever or feel bad, and she had eaten throughout the night when she was up with the baby. She's feeling fine now and hasn't had any more shakes. She says her breasts were kind of full and hot at the time, but not painful, and she did nurse the baby many times overnight. Neither she nor baby is showing any other signs of discomfort.

IME it's either from the excessive water build up (they probably gave you a ton of fluid through IV) or hormones. If you do homeopathics try nat mur 200c My m/w gave me that this time and it worked like a charm. The shakes are no good and they gave me a massive headache.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's residual effect from the epidural/spinal from the c-section? I know that they can cause pretty violent shakes in mamas and I could see that being the case for at least up to a week after. But I'm not sure - it's just a thought.

I know that I'm still shaking occasionally but that is I think due to the bp meds that I'm still on. It started as soon as they gave them to me, long before my epidural.

Take care and hopefully it goes away soon!

I've had the shakes after both of my births, just related to exhaustion. I've been told it's normal. You may want to check with your OB though, since a c-section is a lot more complicated. HTH

I'm not in this ddc but wanted to chime in.. I had the shakes after my last two were born. BADLY. It worried me too but I found it was just the after effect of having a baby. Giving birth IS traumatic on the body (muscles are used that aren't normally and the hormonal letdown) and it takes some time to adjust. I am not sure about having the same thing after a c-sect but I assume it would.. that's major trauma to the body and all those muscles. I would make sure to ask your doctor about it to be on the safe side but from what I have experienced it is totally normal.

Thanks for the input, everyone! It's very reassuring to hear from others with the same experience. I have an incision check tomorrow, so I'll mention it to my doc while we're there. I did manage to sleep and wake up *without* shivering this evening, so that's also a big relief in the mean time.
