Hives

My 3.5 year old DS has been breaking out in hives when outdoors for about 2 weeks now. The weather is warming up here in N. Texas and I've been encouraging him to play outside more, only to have to come back inside due to the hives. This does not happen when he is indoors. We have no pets. My parents have pets, but it happens both at their house and mine.

He also gets really dark circles under his eyes. I think he may have an environmental allergy of some kind. What kind of testing do they do for this? Just a blood test or something more invasive?

Thanks!

They can either do a blood draw or skin prick test on the back (it really doesn't seem to hurt). Even though you only suspect environmental allergies, please also have him tested for food allergies, just in case. I've never heard of someone breaking out in hives from environmental allergies.

Hi, meet me! I am very prone to hives, and it's not food related. So he doesn't get this from the ether, so to speak. The worst time I remember is when I was allergic to the cleaner at a store I was working in. That sucked!

lisac77, did you see the thread just a few below yours about cold urticaria?

i get hives when getting warm.

i think there are 4 or 5 kinds:

cold, heat, pressure, and cholinergic (which means you get hives *as* your body temp elevates, but not if you are *already* at a steady hot temp.)

My bf gets hives twice a year (spring and fall). He got them in Illinois and in Georgia (and in France). Some years he only battles with a few, others he is covered and for a month or two. There is no method to his madness. The only thing we know for sure is that the more stressed he gets about them the more he gets and the harder it is for them to go away.

It is hive season for him right now. He came home from work with one on the back of his head and one under his eye. This spring it has been an easy season so far. Last spring was a nightmare. He learned not to plan a week long France trip with school during hive season.
