How many Cloth Diapers do I need to bring?

I have search a little and can't find a thread about this, if there is one out there please feel free to direct me to it!

I have no idea how many CD to bring to the Birth Center. My stay will be somewhere between 2 and 12 hours after giving birth. I didn't start CD'ing with my DD until she was 6 months, so I have nothing to reference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I hope no one else is still up this late to read this as we should all be sleeping!
Thank you
Amanda

I remember using about 5 diapers in the first 24 hours.

Meconium is horrible to get out of cloth diapers, I remember this very well. If you don't mind stains that never go away, that's fine. You could use disposable inserts/liners to prevent that, though. (I didn't think to get any.) My plan is for sposies until mec is gone.

I'm with Kate, meconium is blecky to clean up - I just put a layer of old flannel in my dipes for the first day or two until that is gone (and throw it out if it gets pooped on). We'll be at home this time, so I haven't thought about it much, but I know DD pooped a LOT in her 6 hours at the birthing center, LOL!

Thanks for that. I have a bunch of old fleece liners, so maybe I can use that. I am pretty sure that the Birth Center will have some sposies on hand so... hmm. Ok, I guess I will plan on a combination of their paper diapers, and some of my own cloth, with some sort of liner. So maybe like a half dozen just to be safe?:

Maybe you will have a different experience, but in my world newborns use a LOT of diapers ... You could go through 6 diapers in a couple of hours - often little ones pee when you go to change them (so you can lose 2-3 diapers just trying to get a new one on, especially if the person doing it isn't pretty fast with cloth), and DD's meconium came out in several small bits.

I think 6 will be fine, you can always use sposies as backup - and they don't need any diaper for the first few hours, they can just pee/poop in the receiving blankets...

NAK

I have 2 fitted and 2 prefolds packed to take to the bc. I'm planning on coming home within 4 hours. I think (if I read the kellymom website and remember correctly from LLL) that in the first 24 hours, the goal is to have 1 wet and 1 meconium diaper. That's the minimum though, so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to pack some extras.

Last time, we used one diaper at the bc and brought ds2 home in it. We had no staining with meconium on our Kissaluvs and didn't do any liners. We did use apricot oil or olive oil on the baby's bottom to prevent the meconium from sticking to baby's skin and would HIGHLY recommend it!

Yea, I'm planning to take about 1/2 a dozen, but I might just cave & use their disposables during my short stay... (we'll be at a bc as well). Thanks for the reminder about the flannel inserts -- we plan to do that too!

Now where do you find apricot oil?

Burt's Bees makes some. You can get a little bottle in the Baby Starter Kit, which is more than enough. You only need a couple of drops at each diaper change.
