No one knows what makes a child allergy prone, except that heridty can play a part and allergies are increasing.
You didn't do anything wrong. What was the alternative? Cow or soy formula--both big allergens? Should you have given up BFing's known and proven benefits for hypoallergenic forumla which you had no reason to beleive your kid needed?
Does this allergist think all BFing moms should avoid all the top allergens while pg and bfing? what about the nutritional issues of such a limited diet for all moms bfing?
Kids can be allergic to anything; you know what now and can avoid. And the allergist wasn't clear or helpful in what he said. You made a good choice to bf.
i'm so tired I can't be clear, but you shouldn't blame yourself. I have never heard a nursing/PG woman be advised (absent any history of allergies) to avoid any particular food except peanuts--and that's a not-completely-agreed-upon-recommendation.
My kid is allergic to egg dairy peanuts treenuts rice--and I avoided peanuts for years during PG and BFing. I ate tons of soy and wheat and corn, which my son is NOT allergic to... there is no clear easy causal link.
If you haven't already found the forums at
http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org, they were a lifesaver for my family dealing with DS#2's multi-food-allergies. It's worth the money if you have it, and worth asking for the subisdized membership if you don't have the money on hand. Best site I found for helping manage multiple food allergies, elim diets, altering recipes, handling family resistance to allergy-safety issues, etc etc.
