getting started

Thread Starter
dd is 2 months old, and I want to start parttime ec-ing. We've been saying 'pssssss' anytime we notice her peeing/pooping since she was about a week old, but not much else. For the past couple of days, she's been peeing on her fresh diaper before I can get the cover on, almost every time, so I've started holding her over the diaper pail and saying 'pssssss' before putting on the clean diaper. So far, no catches. I tried once about a week ago, when I knew she was working on pooping, she started crying her big cry, and took a long time to calm down afterwards poor girl.

So here are my newbie questions:
first, should I be doing anything different with regards to cueing, etc?
second, is there a reason the diaper pail might be a bad place for her to go?
and third, how long should I expect to hold/cue her to get things started?

thanks!

Hold her w/her back toward you, against your stomach, hands under the legs. If she's unsupported she'll be unhappy. I usually give her a verbal warning before I pick her up (ready to pee?) just so it's not a big surprise. Diaper pail would work, if it's comfortable to hold her there (?) or a sink or the tub. Pee usually happens pretty quickly; poo can take a while. If she starts to arch/cry hard, then take her off; although sometimes babies fuss a bit as they figure out how to go.

You could also try cueing her on the old diaper, but I think they like the feel of a new one .

Hi!

Your cueing sounds good, just continue to do it when you notice that she is peeing.

Diaper pail would work, but YOU may be more comfortable somewhere higher up, like at the sink.

I would definately try classic position as described by CMG, you could also sit backwards on the toilet and hold her infront of you in that way (doesn't work with my boy, but that's because we have to "aim"...should work really well with a girl)...I've always found that if DS doesn't feel well supported he gets really upset.

I'd only hold her there for a few minutes to get started, if she protests try again later. Poops do take longer, but once they get used to peeing, they normally fuss if they're done and just wait if they have poop coming. You could wait for the pee, but its probably easier to just try back later (in 10, 15 minutes maybe? If she's peed already, then make the interval shorter next time) Don't worry, once you find a position she's comfortable in, I bet you'll catch one within a few days, and then you'll be surprised how quickly she picks it up!

Good job so far, for noticing her timing, and for giving her potty oppertunities then!
