Ok, so I had a hellish day today!
April of last year I sent a letter and repayment plan
to the 9 creditors I could track down to whom I owed
debt from before getting married. I specified that
this was money I was making from my work at church (NOT a lot!) and what I
could afford each month so everyone would get some
payment each month. As one debt was paid off that amt
would then apply to the next (snowball effect). I
asked for updated statements from them all. All but
one company replied and each month would send
statements showing receipt of payment and the new
balance due. Debt #6 cashed my checks each month but I
never heard a word from them or received a new
statement.
As they were paid off, debts 1-5 sent receipt saying
the debts were paid in full and thanks. Last month I
sent what was to be my last payment to debt #6
($12.91) per the repayment plan I originally sent
them. I had not missed a payment or anything and as
with all the others I requested a receipt stating the
debt was paid in full. The check never got cashed and
I didn't hear anything. I called and was told a
manager would call me back but never did.
So I called them today. The first time I got connected
with a manager, was told to hold and then was hung up
on.
I called back, didn't get the manager, was told I
owed $90 more in interest
: and when I disagreed they
hung up on me. I called back again, and someone who
REALLY needs Jesus talked to me saying I owed $80 in
interest (do these people communicate at all???) and
that I couldn't set up any old payment plan I wanted
and made fun of me for thinking it was ok to send in
$12 payments!!!
I told her I sent in every payment as
was prespecified. I tried to ask why the company never
contacted me if that was not an acceptable payment
plan and she said it wasn't their job.
(So what is, to
be mean to people?) I told her I'd had NO contact from
ANYONE informing me it wasn't ok and that I would owe
ANY interest (NONE of the other companies have done
that so far!) and she hung up on me. I called back and
got the same woman, repeatedly asked for a manager
which she refused before saying she was the manager
(promoted in a moment - boy if it were that easy!),
kept interrupting me when I asked her to please let me
speak and then hung up on me again.
I just can't believe:
1. how mean they were to me!
2. I was refused to speak to a manager
3. After 8 months of accepting and cashing my checks
based on the repayment plan they NOW tell me (after I
track THEM down, not after any contact from them to
inform me of this) that I owe them MORE money!
4. That this could possibly be legal! (It's from an
old gym membership from 2000 sent to collections - not
even a credit card debt)
5. They didn't contact me to say we aren't cashing the
last check, this isn't your final payment, we're
sending the check back (hasn't been done) or
ANYTHING!!
6. How mean they were to me!! (Yes, they were VERY
mean, it deserves two mentions!)
So, any advice? I've never received a statement or
receipt from them. Who knows HOW they arrived at $80
OR $90 (and couldn't give a straight amount in the
same day) and whose to say they won't or can't tack on
more...based on WHAT????
All I know is they made me cry 5 weeks from having a
baby and that was NOT nice!

) So I have decided to 1. Be better informed re my credit report and history and the like, 2. Follow up with a financial teacher I know to figure all my options and 3. Trust that God is going to take care of me!!
