Quick question about something ped said

Our ped said yesterday that it's "very unlikely that DS would be getting a rash from things I am eating. As they wouldnt' be passing through the breastmilk enough to casue him to get a rash" and that the Rash was most likly a normal baby rash.
How true is this? I have never heard of normal baby rash other than baby acne and diaper rash and cradle cap (not really a rash )
Also doesn't EVERYTHIGN you put into your body pass into breastmilk?
and FWIW the rash looks like hives and exactally what a rash caused by an allergic reaction to a medicine I've seem (not on my DC but on another~ and the rash was diagnosed a reaction to the med.. an allergy)
So is the Dr uninformed? (i'd rather not call him full of crap yet ! )
thanks

My nurslings get/got rashes from offending foods. When I stopped eating the food, ta da! No more rash!

Your doctor doesn't know what he's talking about.

The dr. is uninformed. LOTS of babies react to things mom eats.

I'll say it Your doctor is full of crap.

Your instincts sound like they're right on target and you need to find a doctor who actually knows something about allergies.

I'm hoping that the allergist will know something !!! !

Well, my child had several different types of allergic reactions to food I ate, including vomiting and eczema. At five months old, when he was exclusively breastfed, he was diagnosed by an allergist as allergic to eggs milk and peanut--none of which he had ever had directly. Eliminating those foods from MY diet eliminatied his allergic symptoms.

And the ped is somewhat ill-informed about proteins in BM--and about infants' "ability" to react allergically to them.

I also think that your doctor is just wrong.

I'd love to see his references for that b/c in the few studies that have been done (for ex. beta lactoglobulin from cow's milk passed thru BM in some women contributes to colic and milk allergy) contradict him.

Another vote to your Dr. has no idea what he is talking about.

No, not everything you take by mouth crosses the milk barrier. However, foods do. My ds gets a head to toe rash if I eat milk, eggs, nuts or berries. Do make sure the allergist you ultimately settle on understands breastfeeding and how it all "works." LLL would be a great resource for suggestions of docs who understand and help with that stuff. The leaders can't make suggestions, but once the meeting is closed, you can put it to the group and I am sure that you'll get some suggestions!

Yeah, ds1's ped in 1999-2000 said that, too. I went to LLL and got good info, bought Doris Rapp's "Is This Your Child." Did my own TED, not very well, I was clueless, but I muddled through it and ds has outgrown his allergies.

Ped w/ ds3 is much more knowledgable and helpfull, but he has a son w/ FA's, which makes a HUGE difference, imo.
