We're Debt Free!

Thread Starter
We've been doing the dave ramsey baby steps and with yesterday's tax refund we are debt free!

We paid off dh's student loan, our credit union loan, a past due electric bill, and our property taxes with our tax refund yesterday. Dh got a copy of our credit report and it's clear once those things are gone.

In August we sold our home and with the proceeds we paid off the leins (overdue prop taxes, water bills) and bought a smaller and more cost efficient home that we love. This time last year we were almost $15,000 in debt between the leins, the loans, an almost $3K owed to our heating company. We paid about $6K of our debt just by scraping up every penny we could and throwing it at debt, the other ~$9K came from selling the house.

Now I am on baby step #3 - saving 3-6 months worth of expenses.

Just had to announce because yesterday was the 2nd happiest day of my life. Dh and I just sat on the couch and stared at each other dumbstruck after that last check was mailed.

I'm so happy for you!!!!! You worked hard for that. Congratulations!

We were in horrible debt - over $40K in high interest/creditcard debt + $90K in student loans. Now we've only got about $5K in a lower interest credit card and are student loan payments are manageable... The best part is not having tons of bills coming in! It was getting confusing!

Congrats! Isn't it an amazing feeling. I sold the house that my ex and I owned several years ago and paid off all our respective debt in one day. It was the most amazing thing!

I swore I'd never let myself get in debt again. Well.....that was 9 years ago and here we are, debt-filled again. But we're two years into formally getting it paid off and there's definitely a realistic end in sight. In another 2 1/2 years we should be debt free again. I can't wait!

Allowing it to happen again is one of the biggest mistakes of my life!

Congrats mama!!

I am working on the same thing. As soon as the tax refund comes in we will have less than 2000 left in debt to pay off and I want that paid off before the end of the year as well. Then the only thing we will owe is my MIL for the van she bought for us and I am going to try to have that 5500 paid off this year as well and then we can start on the savings that I need to have to make me feel better.

Woohoo for you!!

We did the same thing last year--sold our house and got out of debt 100%.

Loved calling the credit card companies and wanting to know the payoff amount--they stammered and got all flustered.

Now wait until you start getting the "love letters" from them: "We noticed you recently made a large payment and we hope we aren't losing you as one of our valued customers...."

Congratulations! Do you listen to Dave's radio program? I love listening on Friday when people call in to yell "WE'RE DEBT FREE" - it's really inspiring!
