Induction then surgery- yikes!

I haven't posted here a lot, I tend to lurk more but some of you may recall that I've been having issues with my gallbladder. I've been on a very, very strict diet since 26 weeks and my attacks are still happeneing frequently. My doctor has perscribed me pain meds to use for attacks and I try to meditate/breathe/take a hot shower through the attacks, but they are unbearable. I'm having 3-5 bad attacks a week- some that aren't even touched by 2 Percocet. I've been to the hospital for IV meds a few times in the past few weeks. UGH!

Anyway, ultrasound showed that my GB wall is thickening, which indicates infection. We are monitoring my liver enzymes and such, but this gallbladder needs to come out ASAP. My general surgeon wanted to induce at 35 weeks but I said no. My OB thinks that 38 is the max that we should go and I'll have the GB surgery within 24 hours of the birth.

Yesterday at my appointment (35 weeks 4 days) I was at 3cm, 50% effaced so I am encouraged that an induction would go well. I'd really like to go into labor on my own though. Maybe cross your fingers that this baby decides to make her appearance as soon as she is ready (before the induction)?

I'm really nervous about the surgery. I know it is not a major surgery, but I tend to be more scared of breastfeeding than birth and I don't want the general anesthesia so soon after birth to impact our nursing relationship. I know that I can nurse immediately after I wake up, but it still scares me. I plan to try to express some colostrum and I have a friend's donor milk just in case that can be syringe fed to the baby should she get hungry in the hour or two that I am away.

Eek! I had hoped that this birth would be different than my last (also an induction). I'm kind of freaking out that I only have a few more weeks to go.

I'm sure it will all work out, but this is certainly not how you want to spend the end of your pregnancy - worried about other issues. It does sound like your gallbladder really needs to come out though, and at least you know that you'll have your baby and feel better soon.

mama!!!

I had my gallbladder out but didn't have that issue while PG! It seems like the gallbladder + PG happens more often than one would think, though . . .
The surgery for me was fine though I did have to back to the hospital for a week because they missed a stone or something (we never found out the cause).

Re: breastfeeding. Each time for me has been so different. The 1st two times I had issues (that we finally worked out) and now, THANK GOODNESS, 3rd time is the charm for me and I don't. Partly it was because I've learned so much, partly it is the babe. If you have ANY doubts those first few days get help from everyone and it will be great!
