I want to make part of a wall into a chalkboard w/ chalkboard paint. only problem is the wall is texured. how do I remove it? sanding? TIA for any help or suggestions!

It really depends on what the texturing is made of. Is it a sheetrock wall with a sprayed on texture? Or a plaster wall with textured plaster?

We've removed sprayed on texture from ceilings with water and a scraper. It came off easily. On the other hand, our walls are plaster with slight texturing and I think that would be difficult to completely remove. Probably easier to get a piece of sheetrock and cover the old wall.

Textured plaster will be a royal pita to get off the wall. What you could do is get a sheet of very thin MDF or Luan, and paint that with the chalkboard paint.

I'm pretty sure it is plaster texture.

MDF or Luan? what are those?

my Dad is coming to visit next week, maybe he can help!

Once it's been sealed with paint, it's not coming off. You can add more compound over it to smooth out the texture, or cover it with another surface as suggested.

I second the suggestion to paint a board of some sort and hang that on the wall. I've heard you want the surface very smooth.

Luan is a type of wood, plywood is a type of wood panel, made up of plys or layers of thin wood veneer, glued togather with the grain running across the preceeding layer. Typically luan is made as plywood. Luan is an inexpensive alternative to pine or fir plywood. Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, is a composite wood product similar to particleboard. It's made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat, and pressure.

Basically cheap alternatives to plywood. The bonus of how mdf is made is that it's got no graining.
