I know this isn't a question with easily defined perameters, but bear with me. Where were you when you considered labor to have begun?

This is a multiple choice poll.

There should be appropriate answers for those who've had multiple labors.

I was at work when my labor started with back pain and nausea. I didn't realize I was in labor (well, deep down I did because I took all my personal belongings with me when I left) but I left work at noon and drove home. Dh made lunch but I couldn't eat much and was sooo sleepy that I laid down and slept for a few hours. I woke up feeling worse and labor really kicked in after that. I called the midwife at 3AM and ds was born 47 hours later

With my first I was at home.

with my 2nd, my water broke at home, but I didn't go into labour until 10 hours later at which point I was at a B&B near the hospital checking DH & my mum in. So I guess I was in *a* home, just not my own or that of my family.

Both of my labors started with spontaneous rupture of membranes. The first time I was sleeping woke with a contraction, got up to pee and stretch and I got amiontic fluid on the carpet of my bedroom.

With ds2 I woke up when DH went to bed at 11 (I had been asleep about an hour). I rolled over to change positions and my amiontic fluid gushed all over the bed. The fun thingy was the I had had plastic on the bed in prepartation for a homebirth and it was to noisy and crinkly so I put it under the bed to place in it's spot when I needed it. I already had two sets of sheets on the bed and got them all wet right off the bat.

DS1 - Water broke at home, went to hospital and slept. Labor started the next morning.

DS2 - Water broke at home (Can't remember for sure, but it was more than 24 hours after water broke that I started "real" labor), labored at home, delivered in hospital.

Both at home in the early morning hours.

All three of mine started at night while I was in bed.
The boys started in the early AM, around 4-5 am

I started having contractions while swimming at my mom's house (but didn't noticed until after I got out of the pool.) I had them off and on all night, until I was just falling asleep (around 1 am) and they started coming every 6 min... a feeling that felt like it was in my bowels/back moreso than any contractions I'd felt before.

So technically, I was at home.

I had some contractions at home the evening before DS was born, but I guess you could say I went into labor when my water broke - at work, no less! Thankfully, it only partly broke so the guys at work didn't know. They would never have let me live it down!

With dd I was induced so I can't really answer for her. With ds I was purposefully doing at home remedies to try to jumpstart labor as I was almost 42 weeks and wanted to still have my homebirth. I thought my 'bladder hurt' and told my mom who was at our home watching our dd while DH & I had been going for walks. Since it was the day before Easter, my mom and I decided to go to the grocery store to get some stuff for Easter dinner and some eggs for dd to help dye. When we got to the store suddenly I felt like couldn't walk because I was having like one big long contraction. I insisted that we finish our grocery shopping even though my mom was a little freaked out. DS was born less than 2 hours later, which happened to be a half hour before the midwife arrived! I hope next time around I'll have better sense to be at home and call people earlier!

I was at home. I woke up on the Sunday morning (DD was born on Monday afternoon) to very early labour and mild contractions. Laboured at home and at my mothers house until the following morning when contractions were around 4 minutes apart and then into the hospital. Baba was born 8 hours later!

With my only true labor, I was at the book store when labor began. I was still on the fence whether to get my tubes tied or not after the birth. So naturally, I was reading a nursing book about the pros and cons of getting my tubes tied. BTW, after reading, I decided it was safer for DH to get fixed than me get my tubes tied. (Of course, I didn't know that the V wasn't going to work for him!)

My other 2 babies: My first I was so scared and had no idea what I was getting myself into. I got induced with him. My second was breech, 9 lb 14 oz and was post dates. I had a cesarean birth with him after biophysical showed deteriating function of placenta.

I was walking around the flea market with my mom and niece and her baby when the contractions that would lead to dd's arrival started, but I was home before they got close together. I didn't even really know what they were until we were home and they got a little stronger.
