Let's chat about probiotics...and some questions too

Hello All-

I would like to hear about everyone's experiences with probiotics for their dc and themselves. I've been having a hard time finding out good info on this and thought this may be the best way to share info. and for me to increase my knowledge. I couldn't find any sticky on this. So please please feel free to redirect me.

Brand of product,
type of probiotic i.e. bifidous etc.,
dairy/dairy-free,
target age for consumption
how do you take it and how much
are you happy with it
links to info.

A little HX on our probiotic use:
I started taking Acidophilus and also giving to ds when he was a newborn, once I discovered he had eczema (it started in his diaper area). At that time I was eating yogurt daily and keifer a lot because I really love that stuff. Anyway once I figured out dairy was causing reactions, we stopped daily and Acidophilus because of a dairy base, so that was stopped shortly after we started.
For numerous months now he takes Natren Bifido Factor, a non-dairy refridgerated bifidious, a capsule poured into a little water, he drinks it down very easily and the taste does not bother him at all. I'm not really sure how much of a difference it makes in balancing his gut flora because I can't see his gut flora, ykwim? I wonder if there is something better I should give him? I do know avoiding his food triggers is what I can tell makes a difference in his eczema flare ups.
I take flax supplements but not any probiotics yet. I would like to know some good brands for adults b/c I don't really want to take one that doesn't work, ykwim?
-------------------
DS' HX of eczema:
DS was EBF for first 8 months.
Noticed ds' eczema around 6 wks of age. Started in diaper area as bright red. I won't go into detail here about figuring things out and poor advise from dr's.
From 2-5 months of age I was doing various elimination diets to try to figure out his triggers to what I was eating. His eczema gradually spread to stomach, back and legs.
I really figured out his major allergens and eliminated them when he was 5 months old. On rare occasion I may eat something with an allergen in it (dairy, wheat, rice, etc etc).
His skin started to clear up by the time he was 6 months old and by 7 months old his skin looked wonderful.
From 8 months old to present (currently 13 months old) ds has been eating solid food in addition to being breastfeed. I have found more food triggers and eczema flares up off and on. I think this is when it started to spread to his face. He has never itched his ezcema. The eczema now starts out first on his face, neck, scalp, back, stomach and patches on legs--in that order depending on severity of reaction. Always more red on face.

So please please share any info and/or your experiences with me. Sorry for the novel--Thanks!

I've been taking FloraMore by Renew Life for a few years now. I've been happy with it. I guess it works. I've also taken Solaray when I couldn't get the other.

I just started giving my kids Nature's Plus Source of Life Animal Parade chewable probiotics. http://www.sourceoflife.com/products...ts&category=12

Tell me more about FloaMore.... is it dairy or non-dairy base? What type of probiotic? How did you decide that this was a good one to use for yourself? Have you seen any benefits? etc.
Thanks--

It is rice based, no dairy, soy, gluten, yeast or corn.

It lists 7 different organisms:
Lactobacillus acidophilus
L. plantarum
L. rhamnosus
L. casei
Bifidobacterium bifidum
B. breve
B. longum

I started it b/c it had the most different strains available at my local hfs. I used to get strep and bronchitis several times per winter and this is the 2nd winter (since starting these instead of just acidophilus, which is what I used to take off and on since before I had even ds1) I haven't gotten either one, even once! I also haven't had any vaginal yeast infections. Actually, I take that back, I had 1 when I was pregnant with Liam, but it was due to too much sugar when we went to visit and celbrated 3 kids' birthdays in one weekend. I did have thrush in my breasts when Liam was a newborn, but I honestly think that was due to his having thrush in his mouth due to imbalance caused by gut irritation from all of his food allergies. Hope that made sense.

it is missing infantis which maybe I should also be taking since I am a nursing mother? THe chewable I give the kids has infantis as well as others, so maybe that's ok. btw, the one I give the kids may not be dairy free. We are ok w/ dairy now, so I no longer watch out for that for ds. We do still avoid soy, he gets hives.

ETA that the one I give the kids (from the link above) is "a proprietary multi-strain blend of friendly intestinal flora - Bifidobacterium [infantis, adolescentis, longum and bifidum], microencapsulated B. coagulans and freeze-dried kefir culture." So more than just infantis I just wonder if the B. adolescentis is ok for my little ones since they're so young.

I hope Jane finds this thread. She really is the person who has done the research, so is the resident expert. Actually, I think I will post a link for her on the HTG thread.

I give my dd Bio-Dophilus, which is free of yeast, gluten, dairy, corn, sugar, etc. It is in a capsule, and I break it open and put it in her formula every morning. I don't know for sure that it helps, but she does have food allergies and some digestion issues. I did a little test and didn't give it to her for a few days, and she had yucky poop again so we're back on it. We'll see.
Oh, it contains lactobacillus acidophilus and lactobacillus rhamnosus. We got it from our chiropractor when she was taking an antibiotic.

thanks for the responses. yeah seems from what i read JaneS knows her stuff. maybe she will direct to a sticky on good brands of probiotics (and other products).
she should go on the road with this stuff. i'm sure plenty of us would pay for consultation (i would, i would) so hopefully she could get some kind of initals behind her name and a license and then my insurance would pay.

everything you said made sense. i will look to find the site of the one you are taking. i'm glad you get less sick now that you take it. good question about should your probiotic have infantis strain in it too since you are still nursing. i am nursing as well and it'd be good to know that answer in my search for the best probiotic for me. btw: seems i get less sick : now and my environmental allergies are better too now that i eat meat(i was a long time strict vegetarian). i will be excited to see what probiotics can do. yeah, i would wonder too about the probiotics your little ones are taking and if it's okay for them to have the b. adolescentis strain. i also saw that it has fructose in it which i'm sure makes it yummy for the kiddos but i do wonder about that too.

i know there are tons of companies that sell probiotics. i want to make sure i get one that actually works and is dairy free and other allergens free. i did find a link to the company Enzymedica on a sticky and it looks like they have a lot of good products. it would be so great to have a one stop shop for what i want (probiotics for me, maybe a different one for ds since he' 13 months now and eating solids, enzymes for both of us all dairy free....).

i still can't find any stickies about brands of probiotics (or any healing the gut products for that matter). i spent loads of time this a.m. searching around htg tribe and related stickies on the related forums. i've browsed this for months and months and it doesn't seem to get easier. : a whole lot of info to sift through if you don't really have lots of knowledge, while at the same time entertaining an babe on the run ykwim? but i really need to get on the ball with this stuff and heal my and ds' gut. i thought about posting to htg but feel i really need to learn more before i do. sorry mamas for the vent. gradually i do feel i am learning.

There isn't a list or sticky of which I'm aware.

I do have a small report from ConsumerLab.com that rated different products for live bacteria I'd be glad to send anyone who is interested (email me).

Personally I'd rate kefir, Nature's Way Reuteri and Natren's products high. Culturelle has a ton of studies to back it up, but it doesn't colonize the intestines, it is a helper strain. Our holistic dietician likes Pharmax http://www.emersonecologics.com/Comp...PH3&cn=Pharmax and www.CustomProbiotics.com can do personalized formulas.

You know exactly what the condition of your gut flora or your childs is everyday... by your poop!

An EBF babe is easiest to figure out, it should be yellow seedy and not smelling unpleasant, like yogurt due to beneficial bacteria that is supposed to be there. Similarly, anyone else's poop should not stink horribly either! Having been through this whole experience with DS and I, it's like anything else, you kinda know it when you see it.

As far as strains go, I think giving acidophilus to an infant is not correct. I did that too b/c I didn't know. I'm sure you've seen the bifidus info in the HTG sticky. As the child eats more solids, then the gut flora starts to shift from bifidus dominence to more like an adults, but I cannot say which is best at a particular age, it's just not known at this point. I'm trying to find more specific info but there's not a lot out there.

Lactobacillus, even in an adult, only comprises 1% or less of total gut flora. If you are having a major problem, acidophilus is only going to be able to do so much, and dosage is a consideration. Putting it in perspective, your flora weighs 3 lbs. Think of 3 lbs vs. a tiny capsule/day. Your flora is very dependent on what you eat and other factors.

I like homemade kefir b/c it's a food product and has multiple strains of beneficial bacteria and yeasts and a very high count, like taking a bottle/day of pills.

The book "Bacteria for Breakfast" is a very good read with study references showing how gut flora directs the immune system and the imbalance is what leads to food allergies, not the other way around. I need to buy this myself, just got from library and I miss it since I've returned it!

Thanks for the response JaneS (I was out of town due to a death in the family and hadn't had a chance to respond).
