Does anyone own this dvd? Is it worth buying? Where did you get it? I"m looking for waterbirth videos I can watch with dd (almost 2)... is this one appropriate?

If there's any place that sells this dvd along with birthing supplies, that would be great too!

I don't own it, but I have seen the vhs version. I love this film. It has urban waterbirths in plexiglass(or acrylic) tanks and births into the Black Sea. One of the midwives in the film gives birth into one of the tanks with her kids nearby.

Yes, it's worth it, it's awesome. The new one is even better, "Birth as We Know It".

I've seen Birth as We Know It, and I quite like it. Totally appropriate for a toddler, if a bit long. You may want to watch it yourself, or with her just in the room, and then go back and show her the birth bits specifically later.

Except for the "practically having an orgasm while giving birth" part.

I don't see that as in any way inappropriate for a toddler.

true, and even if a toddler or small child were to know what an 'orgasm' is then it's still not inappropriate!

I loved that video! I don't own it, but watched it as part of my doula training. It was so neat to watch all the blond babies swimming naked in the sea. And the midwife giving birth in the plexiglass tub was amazing!

Water birth seems to have a negative stigma because of this (from the people I have mentioned it too, anyway), so although I'm very interested in this video this makes me reluctant.

As soon as I mention water birth I spend the next 5 minutes discounting the 'swimming' bit and promoting its safety and comfort.

I really am hoping to buy one birth dvd (and rent/borrow others) and this is the one I've had my eye on because on top of some great reviews it has information that is pro-intact and also included information on EC, from what I understand.

I think she meant the older babies who were actually, y'know, swimming?

But now that you mention it, I recall during at least one of the ocean births going "bring the baby up! why aren't they bringing the baby up? Someone pick up and cuddle that baby! well geez, finally!" But at most I think it was maybe half a minute of the baby being underwater after birth before being brought to air. It just FEELS really really long.

I dunno though, I've only seen it the once, and I didn't have a stopwatch or a notebook out (probably should have ).

Thanks for all the replies. I'm thinking I'll get it and then donate it to the midwives collective when I'm done with it so other women can see it too... I think I'm done having babies after this one.

As creatures dependent on air for breathing, I think we have an instinct to feel like the baby needs to be brought out into the air.

But, remember, the baby is getting oxygenated blood from the placenta for a while after birth. So, if he isn't inhaling any and putting it into his blood, he is still getting it.

I like how well the human design works. We actually are given a period to get the hang of breathing before we have to do it ourselves! Isn't that awesome?

I just got my copy of "Birth into being" today, it is fabulous and so much more than the already fabulour "Birth as we know it". The new one still shows much of the clips from birth as we know it but is an expanded version with a lot more topics and deeper spiritual and physiologic aspect....which science is finally cathing up with. The talk of Limbic Imprinting and celluar memory, birth traumas of our own and partner ~ it was just packed plum full of awsome cutting edge stuff.

The temperature change on the cord, as well as air hitting it, can switch the baby over to trying to breathe. So you don't want to dally bringing the baby up out of the water. It doesn't need to be a panic, and you have time to push the baby out if you push the head out in one contraction and the shoulders in the next, but doing what the Russian women seem to be doing (holding their babies underwater for some time) is NOT recommended, and a baby CAN drown under these circumstances.

I like the video, and the orgasmic birth is my favorite. I hope that's the impression of birth my daughters have. My almost-3 year old has been watching birth videos forever; IMO they are all appropriate for kids except the highly medicalized births because that's not what I want her to think of when she thinks of birth. She's not really into TV but is always asking, "Can we watch babies born?"

I don't like them leaving the babies under water so long either. The main reason for me is I don't see the point. It's adding risk (I know w/ my 2nd my placenta detatched VERY quickly), and it doesn't seem to have much of a point. I know that w/ both my births, I wanted that baby in my arms after all that hard work. That's JMO...

Well, if the point of there existing a period when they are still getting oxygen from you is to give them time to get the hang of breathing on their own, it seems logical to me to not waste much of that time in the water. Best to let them get started on trying to breathe well before their time runs out, I think.
