My CC offered me a buyout!

I am so happy. We have been struggling for the past year due to dh being unemployed and my hours got cut from full time to part time. I do some work on the side and dh works on Saturdays (He is the SAHP) We currently get some food assistance and heating assistance (Thank goodness cause oil is stupid!!!)

So we have not been able to pay anything outside of the necessities, mtg, elect, oil, phone, child support, etc. Needless to say the CC's have gotten pushed to the back burner. 3 of the 5 actually are working with us and have given us no interest, very low payments. 2 have been complete buttheads (BOA) and I told them to write it off and do what they had to do (We are judgement proof, I consulted a lawyer because our income, debt and assets are all under the guidelines) So not much they can do except attached our house, but we are never selling anyway.

So I talked to one of my cards last week and they offered a buyout of 60%! Foloowing Dave Ramsey we know that 60% is about as good as it gets, so I accepted! Granted I have to pay the buyout balance in 4 payments, but we can do it if we are very very careful. I am so relieved!

Our credit is in the toilet anyway, and it really doesnt matter cause I love Dave Ramsey and we are never borrowing money again! So 1 down, 4 to go!! We are going ot save up and offer 60% to one of DH's low balance cards after this is done. I SO HATE CC's! I wish they would teach people how to use them early in life (Or not use them! Even better!)

I also did this after my first husband left me with $25k in debt and it is such a relief to be done with a card! The first company I worked with on this told me something that subsequent companies did not -- if they forgive more than $600 in debt, you will get a 1099 for the money they forgave. When I asked subsequent companies about this, they were surprised that I knew and confirmed that I was correct.

It has been probably 7 or 8 years since I was dealing with this situation and do not know if the law has changed. Hopefully your credit card company gave you any information about this that you need to know, but if not, I would encourage you to ask! I was glad to know before it got to be tax time!

Oh, they specifically said we would get a 1099 as it is well over $600.00 they are forgiving. But thanks for the heads up!
