Why oh why does my cat insist on drinking out of the bathtub???????

My cat is a neutered 15-year-old male who is in pretty good shape (a bit overweight...okay, he's about 20 lbs.). I've had him since he was born. Although I change his water at least twice a day (sometimes more), he meows until I follow him into the bathroom, where he wants me to turn the water on and put the plug in so he can drink that water. WHY? I thought it might be because it is colder, but I give hime fresh, clean, cold water in his bowl and he refuses to drink it! It's driving me nuts!

Any thoughts??

Mine likes to drink from the bathroom sink where she makes all pretty at you to 'get' you to make her drink by scratching her back in just the right way. Seems like she's saying "If you're really good and do it exactly right, I'll reward you by letting you watch me drink".

nothing to add, but my MIL has a cat that will only drink out of the running kitchen faucet.

Cats like really fresh water. And no matter how often the bowl is changed, it's still not as fresh as the tap!! Two of our cats do it. I'd prefer that they drink from the bowl but the meowing is quite persistant. We used to have one of those pet fountains that they used until the pump broke. This reminds me we should get another one...

I read cats [refer finding their own water, like in the wild.

I've had three cats in a row that have behaved this way. They just love fresh water, and running water in particular. If they get thirsty enough, they will drink out of the dog bowl (NEVER their own bowl), but mainly they wait for someone to turn on a facet and then come running along for a drink.

OMG I thought my Alex was the only one!! He will do like the pp's cat... make eyes at me and rub on my leg until I chase him into the bathroom to turn on the faucet. And I have to scratch his back just right first. Not a drip. No, it has to be just the tiniest trickle with absolutley no dripping. He wakes us up at 4 am with the loudest meows. Every day. And, he is not happy if you just leave it on. No, you have to turn it off when he's done and then turn it on again when he's ready for more. So, we're up at four for water and then again at six. And of course, many times during the day, too. Ah, the simple joys of being a cat. Fresh water from the faucet and people standing ever at the ready to turn it on just for you. I wish it was that simple to make my kids happy.

Do you use a plastic bowl? My cats will only drink out of metal ones. Just a thought.

Yep, cat's love fresh water! It tastes better and has no odor.

Of course, then again some cats have been known to drink out of toilets as well from what I hear.

I've had a cat like that, too. Now I have a cat who insists on drinking out of the dirty dishes sitting in the sink! Blech, talk about nasty.

Mine prefers ceramic! When she can't get it running out of a tap, that is...

They have these cat bowls that work kind of like a little fountain and keep the water moving. Some cats like their water to be moving and won't drink still water.

My cat always liked to drink out of the bathtub too.

Some cats have a really strong preference for RUNNING water. Or maybe water that was running just a second before.

My fsil's cat is like that. However, she's a REALLY weird cat, the most neurotic cat I've ever encountered. DH and I call her, "psycho cat." She has eaten so many non-edible things that the vet actually told my brother and his fi, "You DO know that you can get medical insurance for your cat, right?"

Mine likes the toilet.

He will occasionally do this, though- sit in the bathtub and meow for the water to be run. Cats.

That what we have. We learned early on that our cat will only drink running water and so bought her a water fountain that is 'fresh' in her mind. Which is important because it she doesn't drink enough she can be prone to UT infections. It's very cute, she'll sit at her dish and put her paw under the flow of water watching it get her paw wet and then flick it. I'm pretty sure she's trying to spray us.

Everytime I turn on a faucet, at least one, if not all of the cats come running. One cat likes to drap her body over the toilet seat to take a drink . My oldest cat likes to help herself to my glass of cold water everytime I pour some in it. I bought them a cat fountain, and they love to drink the water where it pours down.

this is funny! I have a cat that used to "ask" me to put my palm out under the trickle of water in the sink/tub so she could lick the water off of my hand! <<love>>
